We are seeking a motivated and dynamic individual for the role of Volunteer Coordinator at the Thunder Bay Correctional Centre. In this role, you will be responsible for developing, coordinating, implementing, and promoting a comprehensive Volunteer Services Program that supports the rehabilitation and reintegration of inmates.

You will play a key role in building partnerships, engaging volunteers, and delivering programs that contribute to a safe, respectful, and constructive environment within the facility.

These positions will support all three locations of the new campus model institution which comprises of three sites located at:
2351 Highway 61 South
285 MacDougall Street
2495 Highway 61 South

The number of positions to be filled has not been identified at this time. This competition will be used to create an eligibility list of qualified candidates to fill upcoming opportunities within the next 21 months following the closing date of the job ad posting.

Successful candidates will be headquartered at the Thunder Bay Correctional Centre New Build site (2495 Highway 61 South) and may be assigned to work at any of the three locations within the Thunder Bay campus.

Candidates may be hired in advance of the planned opening in 2027 to support training and ensure effective operations upon opening.

About the job

• Identify volunteer program needs in consultation with program heads
• Plan, develop, and implement programs for female inmates
• Monitor and evaluate established programs in relation to institutional goals and inmates' needs
• Recruit, screen, orient, train, place, and supervise volunteers as well as monitor their performance
• Provide mentorship, advice, and support to volunteers through on-going professional development and training opportunities
• Ensure volunteers adhere to Ministry standards, policies, and procedures
• Identify and address program related issues
• Plan, organize and co-ordinate recognition events
• Promote programs through on-going communication
• Liaise with institutional staff

What you bring to the team


Specialized Knowledge and Experience

• You have demonstrated knowledge and experience with volunteer programming, recruitment, adult training techniques, and program management
• You have knowledge of volunteer motivational theories in order to place volunteers in appropriate and meaningful assignments
• You have knowledge of community agencies and resources to identify and arrange the appropriate volunteer resources
• You have supervisory skills to recruit, train, motivate, and monitor the performance of volunteers as well as manage the administration of the program

Communication and Interpersonal Skills

• You can explain and promote the institution's programs to the public, inmates, and volunteers as well as prepare and deliver presentations
• You are able to establish and maintain relationships with various stakeholders
• You have writing skills to draft brochures, correspondence, and reports

Evaluative, Analytical, Reasoning and Problem-Solving Skills

• You are able to determine inmates' program needs based on input from institutional staff and inmates
• You can analyze gaps in services, recommend changes, develop new programs, as well as resolve issues/concerns
• You are able to assess suitability when screening applicants for the program

Other Skills

• You are able to acquire knowledge of and comply with relevant legislation (i.e. Ministry of Correctional Services Act, Criminal Code of Canada, Child and Family Services Act)
• You are able to understand corporate policies, directive and administrative procedures to ensure safety and security of the institution
• You are proficient with various computer software applications and database systems to prepare reports, presentations, develop program proposals and correspondence, and maintain statistics
