We're seeking individuals who bring strong technical laundry skills, solid safety awareness, and confident supervision abilities to support daily operations at the Thunder Bay Correctional Centre. These positions will support all three locations of the new campus model institution which comprises of three sites located at:

• 2351 Highway 61 South
• 285 MacDougall Street
• 2495 Highway 61 South

Successful candidates will be headquartered at the Thunder Bay Correctional Centre New Build site (2495 Highway 61 South) and may be assigned to work at any of the three locations within the Thunder Bay campus.

Candidates may be hired in advance of the planned opening in 2027 to support training and ensure effective operations upon opening.

About the job

What can I expect to do in this role?
In this role, you will:
• perform full laundry duties
• schedule laundry loads, pick-ups and deliveries
• keep an inventory or record of cleaning products and chemicals as well as linen supplies and make arrangements for replenishments as required
• maintain work area by cleaning and disinfecting laundry equipment, containers, laundry carts and reporting mechanical failures of equipment to supervisor
• work with offenders in the laundry area, instructing, evaluating and guiding them in their assigned responsibilities
• ensure safety and security of laundry helpers and security of laundry equipment, cleaning products, chemicals and work areas

What you bring to the team


Technical and Safety Knowledge and Skills:

• you have demonstrated knowledge of laundry processes such as treatment of linens and clothing, use of cleaning products and chemicals and the operation of laundry equipment
• you have knowledge of Workplace Hazardous Material Information System (WHMIS), the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OSHA) and related procedures regarding the handling of soiled laundry and supervision of offenders in the laundry area
• you have the ability to obtain and apply knowledge of security practices and techniques to ensure custody and control of offender helpers and security of work area

Analytical Skills:

• you have the ability to sort clothing and bedding by type of fabric and colour and to determine appropriate wash cycle or temperature settings for different types of materials
• you can provide input into offender disciplinary and performance reports and to recognize security and workplace hazards so that corrective action can be prompt
• you can determine and maintain records of usage and ensuring adequate stock to meet established clothing and bedding quotas

Communication Skills:

• you can exchange facts and information and follow general instructions regarding laundry tasks
• you can identify and report mechanical failures of laundry equipment and record inventory and cleaning logs
• you can supervise and train offender helpers in laundry methods and procedures

Tact and Discretion:

• you have ability to maintain control of offender helpers, deal with behavioural issues and ensure adherence to institutional safety and security policies and procedures
