About the job
You will:
• Provide consultation and advice on health and safety legislation, policies and procedures.
• Promote and help foster a proactive health and safety culture across the organization by partnering with managers and employees to identify, assess, and mitigate workplace risks.
• Coordinate the delivery of health, safety and wellness programs, analyzing their impact on business goals.
• Coordinate the development and improvement of health, safety, and wellness programs with a focus on prevention.
• Develop and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
• Research and recommend health and safety controls to mitigate workplace risks and promote a safe work environment. Provide expert advice and support on hazard assessments, work refusals, JHSC matters and workplace violence incidents, while guiding management on legislative compliance and health and safety requirements.
• Support managers in fulfilling their health and safety responsibilities by providing guidance, tools, coaching, and advice on risk management, due diligence, incident prevention and legislative compliance.
• Assist managers in investigations, workplace violence risk assessments, and compliance with internal policies and legislation.
• Develop and deliver health and safety education/training to OPS staff through various mediums, ensuring consistency and continuous improvement. Coordinate external training providers where appropriate.
• Monitor and evaluate health and safety compliance through audits, inspections, reporting, and performance metrics, identifying trends and recommending corrective and preventive actions to reduce organizational risk.
• Support contingency planning and emergency response teams for workplace crises.
• Exercise discretion and sound judgment in managing confidential information and records.
• Maintain a database to monitor metrics and implement a proactive approach to accident prevention.
• Embody the SLPC's equity, diversity and inclusion principles while interacting with staff and guests.
What you bring to the team
Mandatory requirements
• Successful candidate must possess a valid Ontario Class G driver's licence and be able to operate a fleet vehicle to travel to geographically dispersed sites.
KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE
You have:
• Knowledge and experience in developing, implementing, and promoting proactive health and safety programs, risk management strategies, compliance monitoring processes, and employee training initiatives across diverse operational environments.
• Knowledge in occupational health and safety theories, principles, practices and techniques to provide support to staff.
• Knowledge in governing acts, legislation, case law and regulations specifically in relation to the Occupational Health and Safety Act to interpret and provide consultation and advice to management and Human Resources.
COMMUNICATION AND RELATIONSHIP MANAGEMENT SKILLS
You have:
• Effectively influenced stakeholders by building alignment and securing commitment to a chosen course of action, while fostering strong collaboration with the team and with external partners.
• Demonstrated superior oral and written communication skills to sustain good working relationships with managers, worker representatives, and colleagues; prepare and present a wide range of program materials; and, craft reports, briefing notes and correspondence.
• Strong presentation skills to effectively deliver health and safety training programs.
• Demonstrated relationship building skills to initiate and maintain partnerships and working relationships with workplace stakeholders.
ANALYSIS AND ANALYTICAL SKILLS
You have:
• Demonstrated ability to apply issues analysis and problem-solving skills to understand critical issues which have a potential organization impact and research, analyze and recommend strategies for effective issues response.
• Demonstrated ability to apply analytical and research skills to interpret legislation, directives, policies, collective agreement provisions; and identify impact of initiatives on operations.
