The Ottawa-Carleton Detention Centre provides incarceration for male and female adult offenders on remand and those awaiting transfer to federal and provincial correctional institutions. Short-term offenders also serve their sentences at this detention centre.
These positions are irregularly-scheduled, on-call for 0 - 40 hrs per week with no guaranteed minimum number of hours.
Please note: **the weekly salary range indicated is based on a 40-hour work week.
About the job
Within a systemic change and anti-racism organizational change context that values diversity, your role will include:
• Providing diverse nursing services such as health assessment, emergency intervention and administration of medication in a facility that operates a 24 hours per day, 7 days per week health care unit.
• Liaising with other professionals in a multi-disciplinary team and with correctional staff within the Centre.
What you bring to the team
Mandatory requirements
• You are a registered nurse in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario.
• You are certified in Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS).
• You can work 8 and 12 hour rotating shifts in a 24 hours per day, 7 days per week operation.
TECHNICAL KNOWLEDGE:
• You know nursing theories, practices and procedures to provide exemplary nursing services.
• You can understand and interpret relevant legislation (i.e., Regulated Health Care Professional Act, Health Care Consent Act) to ensure compliance and adherence to offender entitlements.
COMMUNICATION AND TEAMWORK SKILLS:
• You have oral and written communication skills as well as counselling skills to work effectively with staff and clients.
• You can work as a member of a multi-disciplinary team and with a diverse client group.
OTHER ESSENTIAL SKILLS AND REQUIREMENTS:
• You have reasoning and observation skills to evaluate offender's response to planned health care intervention and assess emergency situations.
• You can meet the physical demands of the essential duties of the position.
