The Ministry of Natural Resources, Aquatic Research and Development Section has an excellent temporary opportunity as a research technician in our aquatic genetics laboratory located at Trent University in Peterborough Ontario.

About the job

In this position you will:
-Assist the senior genetics technician with operation and management of the Aquatic Biodiversity Conservation Unit's genetics laboratory;
-Conduct laboratory work such as DNA extraction, quantification, precipitation, amplification, electrophoresis, and scoring;
-Assist with the planning of experiments, manage and summarize genetic data, and prepare reports;
-Provide technical assistance and training to MNR staff, students and collaborators in genetic laboratory techniques and methods.

Mandatory requirements

Valid Class G Driver's licence or equivalent as recognized by the Province of Ontario

Technical knowledge:

- Demonstrated knowledge and experience in DNA amplification and electrophoresis to conduct genetic laboratory work;
- Demonstrated knowledge and experience in laboratory methods used in fisheries and/or population genetics and in troubleshooting biochemical reactions;
- Knowledge of sound data management principles;
- Proven knowledge of safe working practices in a laboratory setting, including the use of hazardous chemicals;
- Demonstrated knowledge of the worker responsibilities as outlined in the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations.

Computer skills:

- Demonstrated knowledge and experience in the use of personal computers for data storage and retrieval.

Leadership, project management and analytical skills:

- Proven leadership, project management, analytical and problem solving skills to implement several project concurrently and to troubleshoot problems in the laboratory.

Communication skills:

- Demonstrated interpersonal skills, tact and judgment to communicate with public, staff, students and clients and to provide technical assistance and training.
- Demonstrated ability to prepare written data summaries.
