Natural Heritage Biologist Intern

Under the general supervision of the Area Supervisor, you will provide assistance and support to District specialists in conducting a variety of activities related to implementing the District's Natural Heritage, Fish and Wildlife, Species at Risk, and Resource Management Planning programs.

About the job

You will undertake research and field inventories to identify and evaluate plant and animal populations and their habitats, create records and reports to document species occurrences, and participate on committees and working groups to provide input to ongoing planning and resource management exercises. As an active junior member of an Area Team, you will provide assistance by: researching biological data; conducting field inventories; communicating with staff, landowners and other partners regarding the Ministry's resource management programs; updating natural resource databases; and participating in resource management and rehabilitation projects.

What you bring to the team

Qualifications:

• Knowledge of biology and ecology including biodiversity and species at risk issues.
• Knowledge of legislative and planning tools that provide for the protection and management of fish and wildlife resources and species at risk in Ontario.
• Basic Knowledge of the flora and fauna of eastern Ontario.
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (oral and written).
• Well-developed organizational and research skills.
• Basic skills in computer word processing and use of spreadsheets.
• A valid Ontario driver's license and the ability to travel and work in remote field locations.
• Proof of eligibility to work in Canada.
• Proof of full-time enrolment in a recognized post-secondary college or university or graduation within the last five years. Please visit the MNR Youth Programs site for more information.
• Candidates are only eligible to participate in a maximum of two placements.

• Relocation and temporary living expenses will not be available.
  
  The successful candidate will begin at the base-level pay rate and will move up in the pay scale in accordance with the OPSEU collective agreement.
