Quetico is a protected, pristine wilderness retreat of international acclaim west of Lake Superior on the Canada-U.S. border. The park's tangled network of lakes once formed water routes travelled by Ojibway and fur traders. Now it is primarily the destination of experienced canoeists seeking solitude and rare glimpses of wildlife by cascading waterfalls, glassy lakes and endless forests. The park is accessible at four points by canoe and two by car (Dawson Trail Campground and Lac la Croix Ranger Station).

About the job

As a member of the Dawson Trail Campground within Quetico Provincial Park team, you will:

• carry out a variety of technical duties
• lead program responsibilities
• provide group leadership associated with park enforcement, resource management, visitor registration, orientation, and the park visitor services program
• provide general interior trail and campsite maintenance

What you bring to the team

Mandatory requirements:

• You must be able to work shifts, weekends and statutory holidays as per schedule.
• You must be able to be designated as a Park Warden and meet ministry certification criteria and standards in the use of force.
• You must be able to obtain an Emergency First Aid certification.
• You must possess a valid driver's license to travel to and from the Park.
• You must be able to obtain and maintain a valid passport to travel within the Park as some areas of the Park require you to cross over into the United States of America.

Technical knowledge:

• You have knowledge of resource management principles and techniques as they apply to parks.
• You possess knowledge of and skills in safe interior backcountry travel, (canoe tripping/camping, navigation and practices/techniques of outdoor living).
• You are knowledgeable of parks programs, services and operating regulations.
• You have knowledge of and skills in the operation and maintenance of a variety of office and light powered equipment such as brushsaws, chainsaws, boats, motors, small hand tools.
• You possess knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act that apply to the workplace and the work being performed.

Interpersonal and leadership skills:

• You possess strong group leadership and interpersonal skills to provide direction to colleagues and stakeholders and enforce park rules and regulations.
• You have demonstrated oral and written communication skills to provide park information to stakeholders and written skills to produce reports and correspondence.
• You have proven mathematical and organizational skills to analyze data and deal with competing demands.
• You are able to work independently and to follow and carry out instructions.

• The successful candidate will be required to undergo a satisfactory criminal reference check prior to the commencement of employment.
• The minimum salary rates identified in this posting are subject to revision as a result of the recently agreed to OPSEU collective agreement covering the period of January 1, 2013 to December 31, 2014.
