Work Description:

Summer positions are available in the areas of Veterinary Services Inspections and Veterinary Inspections and Audits.
You may be required to work on some or all of the following tasks:
• Provide customer service assistance by responding to public and/or internal inquiries
• Positions may have field work that may be physically demanding
• Field work might include research field studies and technical inspections and investigations
• Plan, organize, coordinate and manage daily assigned work
• Work may require experience specified/listed in the questions below

These positions will support different teams on a range of veterinary-related activities including:

Veterinary Services Inspections
• Accompany veterinarians, inspectors or other ministry staff to municipal pound facilities or livestock medicines outlets, community livestock sales, ministry training sessions and/or meetings
• Receive, categorize, review and file reports under the supervision of unit staff
• Assist in drafting, reviewing and editing of technical reports, presentations, research and policy papers, etc.
• Refer to ministry policies, practices, standards, legislation and regulations
• Assist with the development of resource materials related to humane animal handling for various sectors of the livestock industry
• Perform qualitative and/or quantitative research, analysis and evaluation of information and data to produce reports and/or identify trends on various topics related to livestock and health, humane handling and disease control.
• Assist with the development of resource materials related to humane animal handling for various sectors of the livestock industry

Veterinary Inspections and Audit
• Accompany veterinarians, inspectors or other ministry staff to abattoirs, meat processing plants, ministry training sessions and/or meetings
• Assist in drafting, reviewing and editing of technical reports, presentations, research and policy papers, etc.
• Refer to ministry policies, practices, standards, legislation and regulations
• Assist in developing/delivering training materials such as PowerPoint presentations and reference information for inspection staff
• Perform independent literature searches on various topics related to livestock health, and humane handling, food safety, meat hygiene and food animal pathology
• Assist with the development of resource materials related to food safety, livestock health and humane animal handling for various sectors of the livestock industry

Qualification Requirements:

Communication and Interpersonal Skills
• You apply your written communication skills to prepare a variety of documents (e.g. reports, document findings, record data)
• You apply your verbal communications skills to communicate and share your knowledge with staff and support the delivery of education and outreach initiatives
• You apply your verbal, written, listening communication skills and customer service skills to respond to phone, email, and in-person inquiries and provide information to internal clients and/or public
• You apply your initiative and interpersonal skills to work collaboratively within a multi-disciplinary team

Technical Skills and Knowledge
• You have an interest in livestock, meat hygiene or general food safety
• You have an interest in animal welfare, humane handling or veterinary medicine
• Knowledge of livestock production behaviour and welfare to assist with inspections
• Knowledge and experience with data collection and data entry, statistical analysis and reporting
• You apply your experience using Microsoft Office product suite, such as word processing (Word), spreadsheets (Excel), databases (Access); email and Internet to conduct research and prepare a variety of documents

Analytical and Organizational Skills
• You apply your planning and organizational skills to collect, organize, review and verify information/data through review of files, reports, and other means
• You apply your evaluative and analytical skills to analyze information, conduct data and trend analysis and develop recommendations for environmental reports/projects
• Ability to work independently or as part of a team; you plan, organize and prioritize your time to meet competing deadlines

Other Requirements
• You are willing and able to observe animal handling and behaviour at community livestock sales and/or pound facilities
• You are willing to participate in field work that may be physically demanding
• You have a valid Ontario G2 (or higher) Driver's Licence
