The Ministry of the Attorney General, Crown Law Office – Civil, requires one (1) counsel for its Litigation Group.

About the job

Duties Will Include: Acting as counsel as part of a team on high profile complex commercial and aboriginal litigation proceedings; leading litigation teams in respect of such litigation matters and directing less senior counsel in the preparation of such litigation files; representing the Crown, Ministry of the Attorney General, other Ministries and agencies, boards and commissions at all levels of court, including superior courts, the Ontario Court of Appeal, and at administrative tribunals, including the Ontario Municipal Board; liaising with client ministries and agencies in respect of the management of litigation; providing advice to the client ministries and agencies in defamation claims; reporting and briefing Ministry of the Attorney General officials, including the Assistant Deputy Attorney General, the Deputy Attorney General and Attorney General.

Mandatory requirements

Membership in the Law Society of Upper Canada

Knowledge & Skills

Extensive experience in commercial litigation and advocacy, including experience in long civil trials. Knowledge of the rules of evidence, mediation and ADR, the Bankruptcy and Insolvency Act, the Companies' Creditors Arrangement Act, the Expropriations Act, other corporate/commercial and real estate legislation. Knowledge of the Courts of Justice Act, the Civil Rules of Practice, the Judicial Review Procedure Act, the Statutory Powers Procedure Act, the Proceedings Against the Crown Act, rules of evidence, mediation and ADR. Experience in complex commercial litigation cases. Experience and/or interest in aboriginal law is an asset. Experience and ability to lead a team on complex files; work to strict deadlines in high volume environment, excellent judgement, analytical, interpersonal and communications skills.
