What can I expect to do in this role?

Work Description:

Learn to Camp @ Ontario Parks is an exciting program that introduces camping to new audiences through fun and informative teaching sessions. Program leaders are needed to lead all aspects of the learn to camp program including: maintenance and inventory of camping equipment and supplies, organizing and conducting training sessions and providing support to program marketing activities. Leaders will be onsite assisting campers for extended periods of time. Duties:
• Prepare and deliver up to 12 learn to camp overnight sessions based on curriculum provided by the Provincial Learn to Camp Program Coordinator.
• Maintain, track and manage all equipment required for program delivery. Track participant registrations working closely with the provincial Learn to Camp Program Coordinator.
• Maintain accurate records (e.g. equipment inventory, attendance records) and complete post-program reports.
• Deliver presentations on camping to park visitors and local community groups.
• Support program marketing activities provincially and locally (e.g., attend promotional events, develop content for online posting and e-newsletters, take group photos and video footage, support media coverage).

How do I qualify?

Some positions require students to be 15-24 years of age (or 15-29 years of age if you are a person with a disability) due to program funding.

Some positions may require the successful candidate(s) to undergo a personal security screening check as a condition of employment.

Qualification Requirements
Communication and Interpersonal Skills
• You apply your oral communication skills to deliver programs to audiences new to camping, to provide information and to perform public speaking.
• You apply your written communication skills to prepare a variety of documents to support program marketing (e.g. e-newsletters, online postings, maintain records) and management (e.g., post program reports).
• You use your interpersonal skills to provide excellent customer service to park visitors of all ages and backgrounds, and to work collaboratively as part of a team.

Organizational Skills
• You apply your organizational skills to track and manage program equipment
• You plan, organize, track and prioritize multiple duties (e.g. overnight programs, community presentations, marketing activities, track inventory/attendance) and meet competing deadlines.

Flexibility and Judgement
• You exercise your good judgement while working under minimal supervision.
• You are able to adapt programs to changing circumstances (e.g. late arrivals, inclement weather conditions).

Technical Skills and Knowledge
• You apply your extensive knowledge of camping practices and equipment during teaching sessions and lead diverse groups of people with varying needs through creative, engaging and fun teaching sessions.
• You are comfortable working outdoors leading groups of up to 48 participants in a campground setting for extended periods of time.
• You apply your knowledge and/or experience with writing/photography/videography to produce creative promotional materials for the program.
• You have experience with and/or general knowledge of the Ontario Parks system (e.g., role, priorities, rules and regulations, specific parks).
• You apply your technical knowledge of various computer software and hardware to support program activities (e.g., registration tracking, creation of promotional materials).

• You must have a valid Ontario G2 Driver's Licence (or higher) with an excellent record (knowledge or experience operating a vehicle with a trailer is considered an asset).
• You have a valid and current certification in Standard CPR and Standard First Aid.
• You are able to work shift, weekends with an irregular work schedule up to 40 hours/week and work in an outdoor environment.
