About the job

In these positions, you will:
• gather, document, assess and triage information (concerns, complaints and critical incidents) received regarding Long-Term Care Homes in Ontario
• determine the severity of the information received and outline the associated risks to residents
• determine the inspection program's response and action
• support and conduct inquiries and off-site inspections as required
• prepare correspondence, briefing notes and other materials as required

What you bring to the team


Mandatory requirements:

• current registration as a Registered Practical Nurse (at minimum) with the College of Nurses of Ontario

Communication, listening and interviewing skills:

• to deal with contentious issues, sensitive personal health information and complaints from upset or angry individuals
• to effectively communicate with the residents, complainants, stakeholders, the public and LTC Home staff
• to communicate with persons about complex health care issues

Clinical nursing and assessment skills:

• to assess information gained from discussions and interviews regarding the care and services provided to residents
• to determine if there is a true risk of harm to residents
• to discuss medically complex situations and current clinical best practices with other health professionals
• to determine what legislative requirements may be in non-compliance

Knowledge of health care operations:

• knowledge of long-term care homes and health care system operations
• knowledge of current health care practices (e.g. medication administration, skin and wound care, pain management, responsive behaviours, etc.)
• ability to interpret, apply and ensure compliance with relevant acts and regulations governing Long-Term Care homes (e.g. Long-Term Care Homes Act, 2007, the Provincial Offences Act, etc.)

Problem-solving and conflict resolution skills:

• to appropriately respond to complaints about resident care and services
• to prepare ministerial responses to resident care issues
• to diffuse and resolve contentious and highly sensitive issues

Other important skills:

• written communication and computer skills to develop correspondence and briefing notes
• ability to work collaboratively within a provincial team
• ability to work independently and make logical decisions in an emotional, high stress environment
