The Laboratory Services Branch needs a team player to prepare complex environmental samples and conduct organic analysis in support of environmental monitoring programs, special studies, emergency response or litigation.

About the job

In this role, you will:
• perform chemical tests and basic troubleshooting and maintenance of procedures and equipment (i.e. gas chromatographs (GC) and liquid chromatographs (LC) with various detectors)
• acquire and process data using instrumentation software and laboratory information management systems (LIMS) to report data
• report results ensuring that all quality protocols are met
• work as a member of a team and to participate in intra-laboratory activities (e.g. quality initiatives) and participate in method development

What you bring to the team


Organic Chemistry and Environmental Laboratory Knowledge and Experience:

• you understand the scientific principles and practices of analytical and organic chemistry
• you have knowledge of and experience with established laboratory test protocols, procedures, methods (i.e. basic chemistry techniques, sample preparation and instrumental analysis techniques)
• you have experience with various organic analytical techniques and associated instrumentation (i.e. pH meters, rotary evaporators, gas chromatographs (GC) and liquid chromatographs (LC) with various detectors)

Quality Assurance and Legislative Knowledge:

• you know principles and practices of quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC) and can apply them to ensure data quality objectives are met on a daily basis
• you can interpret and apply relevant legislation, regulations and guidelines(Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA), exceedance reporting protocols, occupational health and safety, Workplace Hazardous Information Materials System (WHMIS) and Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS))

Analytical, Evaluation and Diagnostic Skills:

• you can conduct a variety of tests to determine results from established procedures
• you can confirm results comparing expected versus actual output including implications (i.e. processing legal samples)
• you have the ability to diagnose minor repairs and maintain equipment

Computer Knowledge and Skills:

• you are proficient with various computer software and database applications (i.e. MS Office Suite, Windows Agilent ChemStation)
• you are able to process data and create reports using instrumentation software and laboratory information management systems (LIMS)

Communication, Interpersonal and Organizational Skills:

• you communicate effectively and can prepare and present technical information clearly
• you can plan, organize and manage your daily workload and adapt to changing priorities (i.e. high priority and emergency samples)
• you can work as a member of a team and to participate in intra-laboratory activities (i.e. quality initiatives)
