Bring your understanding of natural resource management and communication skills with you while you take advantage of this opportunity provided by the Ministry of Natural Resources. Under the general supervision of the area enforcement manager, you will participate as a member of a highly motivated and professional enforcement team in the delivery of a multi-service integrated compliance program. You will gain progressive natural resource law enforcement experience through a two year training plan that includes assisting in the enforcement of natural resource and public safety related legislation that is consistent with ministry policies and procedures. You will also participate in the delivery of enforcement operational initiatives; liaise with other ministries, enforcement agencies, resource interest groups, community groups and individuals while providing education and information related to natural resource management and protection.

Knowledge and understanding of natural resources and public safety-related legislation; an understanding of the principles of natural resources management in multiple program areas such as commercial/sport fisheries, game/non game species of wildlife, forestry, lands, aggregates, fire and parks; demonstrate good oral and written communication skills; have good interpersonal skills and the ability to exercise sound judgment in stressful and potentially threatening situations; tact and diplomacy to appropriately interact with the public, staff and media in a variety of situations; the ability to work as a team member with good organizational, analytical and time management skills; knowledge of and the ability to use various computer technologies and applications such as email, internet, word-processor and spreadsheet applications.

Mandatory requirements

Proof of eligibility to work in Canada

Proof of full-time enrolment in a recognized post-secondary college or university or graduation within the last five years.

Candidates are only eligible to participate in a maximum of two placements.

CPIC check will be conducted.

Valid driver's licence

Current standard first-aid certification

Current pleasure craft operator's card

Proof of having passed Ontario's hunting licence examination and having successfully completed the Canadian firearms safety Course or successfully challenging the exam.

Key criteria:

Skills and abilities to work as a Conservation Officer including obtaining the legal appointment necessary to use the enforcement powers and authorities of the position, physical suitability and certification in firearms and use of force. Skills and abilities to meet Ministry of Natural Resources approved use of force qualification, which is subject to annual recertification (e.g., use of sidearm, batons, oleoresin capsicum aerosol spray and empty hand self-defense techniques). At the discretion of the Director, Enforcement Branch the intern may be appointed as a Deputy Conservation Officer (DCO, year 1). As a DCO they can only carry out enforcement work with a Conservation Officer.
At the discretion of the Director, Enforcement Branch and based on their progression through the training plan, the intern may be appointed as a Conservation Officer (year 2). The Conservation Officer appointment would contain a condition that the intern could not carry out independent duties and must continue to be accompanied by a Conservation Officer while carrying out enforcement duties.

Note: an enforcement intern is required to work effectively in inclement weather and to work shifts, weekends and holidays as required. A willingness to travel for extended periods of time with little or no prior notice is also required.
