About the job

As the leading Ontario Government employer representative, the Director of Union/Management Relations negotiates successful collective agreements with Ontario Public Service (OPS) bargaining groups and required mid-contract changes and ad hoc agreements. The position provides leadership to the OPS in effective union-management relations and assists in the development and implementation of long-term labour relations strategies using a “one employer” approach.

In this important role you will:

• Be forward thinking: by leading the development and implementation of long-term labour relations policies and strategies.

• Seek solutions: by being responsible for the successful and coordinated negotiation of all OPS collective agreements and mid-contract changes.

• Build critical relationships: through leading joint union-employer committees in order to ensure the application of service-wide labour relations philosophies and directions.

• Model OPS Values: by building trust, encouraging and promoting excellence in service and create environments of collaboration and continuous improvement.

Senior Leadership

• You are a seasoned HR professional.

• You have executive leadership experience in building teams, mentoring staff and delivering results in a fast-paced and high-profile HR environment.

• You have built a culture of diversity, inclusion, equity and accessibility.

Human Resources & Labour Relations

• You have expertise in labour and employee relations and collective bargaining experience.

• You have knowledge of principles and best practices, current theories and trends, employment and labour legislation.

• You have experience with dispute resolution mechanisms, including alternative dispute resolution, conciliation, mediation, arbitration.

• You have proven ability to understand and apply relevant Acts, regulations and policies as they relate to human resources.

Stakeholder and Client Relationship Management

• You have superior relationship skills to develop and maintain critical relationships.

• You are skilled at providing advice and briefings to senior executives or officials.

• You are an excellent communicator with advanced skills in consulting, negotiation, conflict resolution and consensus-building skills.

• You hold a strong track record in issues management, problem-solving and risk mitigation coupled with a high-level political acuity.
