About the job

As a member of the upper great lakes management unit team you will:

• perform complex fisheries biological, statistical, and population analysis
• assist in developing lake-wide plans and activities on fisheries management and rehabilitation
• participate on working groups locally, provincially and internationally
• consult and liaise with partners, public advisory committees and resource users on Lake Superior projects and plans

What you bring to the team

Mandatory requirements:

• You have a valid driver's licence.
• You have the ability to travel in remote areas to conduct field surveys.
• You must be able to use small and large water vessels as well as survey equipment.
• You must have the ability to work in all types of weather conditions.
• You must have the ability to obtain a pleasure craft certificate.

Technical knowledge:

• You have knowledge of fisheries management theory, assessment methodologies and practices.
• You have applied knowledge of fish biology, physiology, growth and its relationship with ecosystem management.
• You have knowledge of the principles and procedures of advanced statistics and population modeling.
• You have good working knowledge of the preparation and review of scientific and technical reports.
• You have the ability to interpret and apply relevant legislation, regulations and guidelines (Fisheries Act, Ontario Fishery Regulations, Occupational Health and Safety Act).

Research, analytical and organization skills:

• You have strong research, analytical and evaluative skills.
• You have the ability to analyze, interpret and transfer results.
• You have proven problem-solving skills.
• You have proven project management and organizational skills to conduct assigned projects and meet tight deadlines.

Relationship building and communication skills:

• You have partnership building skills to explain technical processes in plain language to clients and liaise with specialists.
• You have skills to reconcile differing points of view to gather support from various stakeholders on resource issues.
• You have the ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing including the writing of draft scientific and technical reports.

Computer skills:

• You are proficient with computers and software applications including word processing, databases, graphics, internet, electronic mail, statistical/modeling software and geographic information systems.
