Peterborough District has an opening for an Intern interested in gaining skills and knowledge in the Aggregates and Lands & Waters Program Areas.
What you will do:
• Learn about and assist with the delivery of the Aggregates and Lands & Waters Programs through mentoring with District staff and consulting with other internal and external staff and clients
• Ensure consistent application of legislation in both Program areas
• Take part in the implementation of the District's compliance plans by assisting with file review, site inspections and investigations
• Provide input to land use and resource management planning decisions
• Communicate Aggregates and Lands & Waters Program information to the public, clients, partners and industry by making formal presentations and attending meetings
• Prepare technical reports and correspondence, and respond to requests for information and data
What you bring to the team
Mandatory requirements
• Proof of eligibility to work in Canada;
• Proof of full-time enrolment in a recognized post-secondary college or university or graduation within the last five years; and
• Candidates are only eligible to participate in a maximum of two placements.
Knowledge and Skills
• A basic understanding of the Aggregates and Lands & Waters management programs including the ability to interpret and apply relevant legislation (Public Lands Act, Beds of Navigable Waters Act, Lakes and Rivers Improvement Act, Aggregates Resources Act), regulations, procedures, guidelines and manuals.
• Knowledge of regulatory requirements for aggregate operations and activities on or around water bodies, public lands and waters; related management objectives and practices, and property and land management techniques
• Knowledge of inspection and compliance procedures.
• Well-developed written and oral communication skills to deal effectively with a wide range of clients and ministry staff.
• Strong problem solving, analytical, group leadership, negotiation and conflict resolution skills to review and analyze data, resolve conflicts and facilitate meetings;
• Computer skills including word processing, spreadsheets, database, internet and email software applications;
• Working knowledge of the Occupational Health & Safety Act and those regulations made under the Act that apply to the workplace and the work being performed
Note: The successful candidate will begin at the base-level pay rate and will move up in the pay scale in accordance with the OPSEU collective agreement.
