About the job
• As a member of Forests Branch, provide input and support in the development, maintenance, and implementation of a wide range of program areas such as: forest information management, provincial reporting, independent forest audits, forest operations compliance monitoring, forest competency, forest certification, forest health and silviculture, forest management planning, and forest policy.
• Applying knowledge of legislation, theory, principles and practices of resource management to provide information and advice on questions related to sustainable forest management;
• Providing basic forestry knowledge in harvest practices, silviculture, forest stand dynamics and environmental impacts on non-timber resources
• Investigating assigned components of proposed documents, developing options and recommendations, and producing drafts of material;
• Researching background information, undertaking literature reviews, and compiling summaries as may be required;
• Investigating and undertaking comparative analysis of policy approaches used in jurisdictions outside of Ontario as may be required;
• Undertaking activities that may be required in support of implementation of projects (e.g., Drafting and/or arranging for communications material, undertaking general correspondence with client groups, responding to routine inquiries from the public, etc.)
• Assisting in training and transfer programs by producing presentation materials, developing graphics, assisting with logistical support, distribution of materials to participants, etc
What you bring to the team
Mandatory requirements
• Proof of eligibility to work in Canada;
• Proof of full-time enrolment in a natural resource related program at a recognized post-secondary college or university or graduation within the last five years; and
• Candidates are only eligible to participate in a maximum of two placements.
Knowledge and Skills
• Basic working knowledge of forest management and environmental impacts on non-timber forest resources;
• Some working knowledge of legislation, policies, and procedures governing forest management in Ontario including current forest management principles, practices, and guides used in the Boreal Forest and Great Lakes-St. Lawrence/Deciduous Forest Regions;
• Basic understanding of ecosystem sustainability, wildlife habitat management, and biodiversity;
• Basic knowledge of computer applications and information management (e.g., Microsoft Office, databases, and GIS).
• Knowledge of worker responsibilities as outlined in the OH&S Act;
• Good interpersonal and communications skills (oral and written);
• Good organizational and project management skills; and
• Basic analytical skills and some knowledge of current analytical resource models.
Note: The successful candidates will begin at the base-level pay rate and will move up in the pay scale in accordance with the OPSEU collective agreement.
