The Office of the Independent Police Review Director (OIPRD) is responsible for the objective oversight in the investigation of public complaints against the police of Ontario.

We are seeking seasoned Investigators to conduct specialized investigations of complaints against Ontario's police under the authority of the Police Services Act.

About the job

In this role, you will:

• Conduct highly sensitive complaint investigations and reviews from inception to completion;
• Assess the scope of investigations, develop approaches, tools and plan of actions, and determine the evidence, information and investigation methodology required in order to carryout objective, thorough and timely investigations;
• Provide case management expertise, and ensure investigations are in compliance with legislative and ministry requirements;
• Prepare comprehensive, impartial, thorough and timely analyses, reports, options and recommendations;
• Explain results of findings to support internal and external follow-up activities;
• Participate in investigation-related committees.

Please note: This position requires regular travel, including overnight stays, in order to conduct investigations

Specialized Knowledge

• You have practical and theoretical expertise in contemporary investigation principles, theories, principles, practices, standards and tools
• You have the ability to plan, execute and deliver impartial, accurate and complete investigation analyses, reports and recommendations
• You can ensure investigations are carried out in compliance with relevant legislation, regulations, statues and precedents
• You have a good understanding of the structure of police organizations, the public perception and expectations of police, and the specific public issues regarding police behaviour in Ontario

Analytical, Evaluation, Problem Solving and Organization Skills

• You can gather and interpret evidence to ensure the validity, reliability and completeness of investigations
• You can assess the quality and compliance of investigations
• You can identify and explain details of evidence, and apply situational appropriate case resolution techniques
• You can demonstrate impartiality and aptitude when absorbing details from the investigations
• You can plan and conduct efficient and effective concurrent investigations

Communications, Interpersonal, Interview and Relationship Management Skills

• You can conduct investigatory interviews and discussions
• You can explain investigation principles and theories, needs, approaches, findings, interpretation and analysis of evidence
• You can manage diverse business relationships with internal and external stakeholders, and liaise effectively with complainants, witnesses, specialists and representatives of various police agencies using sensitivity, patience, impartiality, discretion and respect for confidentiality
• You can provide mentoring and job training to other investigators

Computer Skills

• You can use common office software (e.g., MS Office, Internet, email) and customised databases for case management and tracking
• You can prepare a variety of reports and correspondence
