About the job

Work Description:

You may be required to work on some or all of the following tasks:
• Assist the Restoration Ecologist in the set-up and monitoring of field trials, examining site preparation techniques, planting methods and ecosystem trajectory
• Help with biological inventories of study sites across southern Ontario with a special emphasis on plant communities
• Take measurements of site physical and chemical properties with an emphasis on soil characteristics and hydrology regimes
• You will be required to work outdoors and carry equipment (e.g. quadrate frames, buckets, trowels, pigtails pins, tree marking paint, seed lots, plant and soil samples) in diverse weather conditions
• Work may require experience specified/listed in the questions below or other similar tasks as assigned

Mandatory requirements

All positions require students to be 15 years of age on the first day of employment with no age limit.

Some positions require students to be 15-24 years of age (or 15-29 years of age if you are a person with a disability) on the first day of employment due to program funding.

Qualification Requirements:

Communications and Interpersonal Skills
• You apply your written communication skills to prepare a variety of documents (e.g. reports, document findings, and record data)

Technical Skills and Knowledge
• You apply your experience using Microsoft Office product suite, such as word processing (Word), spreadsheets (Excel), databases (Access), presentations (PowerPoint); email and internet to conduct research and prepare a variety of documents
• You apply your ecological knowledge to conducting ecosystem research

Analytical and Organizational Skills
• You apply your planning and organizational skills to collect, organize, review and verify information/data through review of files, reports, and other means
• You apply your research and analytical skills to gather information, assess and summarize and findings
• You work independently with some direction or you demonstrate your interpersonal skills as part of a team; you plan, organize and prioritize your work to meet competing deadlines

Other Requirements
• You are capable of performing manual activities including lifting and carrying weighted items (in accordance with the Employment Standards Act and Workplace Health and Safety regulations)
• You are willing to travel with staff on multi-day outdoor field trips
• You must have a valid Ontario G2 Driver's Licence (or higher)
