About the job

As a team-oriented Senior Environmental Officer, you will:

• Identify complex environmental problems and solutions
• Provide consultative advice and assist in the management of contentious issues
• Inspect, identify, monitor, investigate, and report on a wide variety of pollution sources in the District
• Recommend and ensure implementation of inspection programs
• Negotiate and enforce compliance through abatement programs
• Maintain effective liaison with stakeholders, the general public and clients
• Assess compliance with and enforcement of environmental legislation
• Participate in the Environmental Response Program

What you bring to the team

Mandatory requirements

• You have a valid class G Ontario driver's license

Environmental and Legislative Knowledge:

• You can demonstrate knowledge of theories, scientific principles and practices of environmental sciences with a strong focus on contaminated sites
• You know industrial processes and pollution controls, contaminated site, spill and clean-up techniques
• You can apply sample collection and field measurement techniques
• You can interpret and apply environmental legislation (e.g. Environmental Protection Act, Ontario Water Resources Act, Pesticides Act), regulations, policies, procedures, guidelines, and have knowledge of other statutes (e.g. Municipal Act, Fisheries Act, Transportation of Dangerous Goods Act)

Analytical, Issues- and Project Management Skills:

• You can interpret complex scientific information
• You can identify cause and source of pollution problems and develop an appropriate course of action to remedy the situation, particularly in relation to contaminated sites
• You can oversee clean-up projects by giving direction, setting objectives and ensuring timeliness
• You can apply issues management techniques and demonstrate sound judgment when assessing issues of non-compliance

Communication, Interpersonal, and Computer Skills:

• You have the ability to act as a liaison, building effective working relationships and resolving conflicts
• You can communicate technical information in a clear manner
• You can prepare scientific reports, letters, and other written materials
• You can negotiate positive outcomes concerning implementation of remedial measures
• You know how to use computers and software applications such as word processing, spreadsheet, database, network, etc.
