Bring your strong technical expertise and professional experience to the Building and Development Branch of the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing where you will apply your sound knowledge of engineering principles by providing research, advice, clarification, administrative and technical support on all parts of Ontario's Building Code.

What can I expect to do in this role?

As the Code Advisor Fire Safety Specialist, you will:

• using engineering principles, provide advice on the Building Code Act and on all parts of Ontario's Building Code
• review and evaluate building-related provincial regulations, the model National Building Code, and proposals from industry and municipalities; also review and evaluate, new building technologies, procedures and materials
• evaluate potential Building Code changes that reflect government objectives and considerations such as safety, barrier-free accessibility, energy efficiency, practicality and cost; prepare recommendations for senior staff
• provide expert advice on the suitability of new materials to the Building Materials Evaluation Commission, and/or sufficiency of compliance on specific projects to the Building Code Commission
• analyze design problems and provide recommendations for Building Code compliance, including problems related to the design and operation of fire detection and suppression and evacuation systems
• organize and /or participate in workshops and seminars to increase awareness of technical issues requiring professional design expertise
• represent the Branch/Ministry at various committees within and outside of government, e.g., Canadian Standards Association Task Groups and Committees on the model National Building Code
• work with municipalities on Building Code issues and participate in municipal Code interpretation committees

How do I qualify?

Mandatory requirements:

• Degree in Engineering (Civil/Building/Mechanical/Fire Protection) from a university of recognized standing and licensure by the Association of Professional Engineers of Ontario.

Technical knowledge:

• You have comprehensive knowledge of the theories, policies and principles of engineering related to the construction of buildings.
• You understand the technical requirements of Ontario's Building Code and other requirements related to the construction of buildings.
• You have expert knowledge and in depth experience in addressing Building Code compliance issues, including those related to barrier-free accessibility, non-combustible construction methods, fire alarm and sprinkler systems and the special requirements for high buildings and for interconnected floor spaces.

Legislative knowledge:

• You have a thorough knowledge of Ontario's Building Code, related legislation/regulations (e.g. Occupational Health and Safety Act, model National Building Code), relevant standards, and the Standards Council of Canada's standards development process.
• You can participate in the development and maintenance of regulations, evaluate the impact of proposed regulations on the building industry and make recommendations for potential regulation changes.

Communication and consultative skills:

• You have demonstrated communication skills to draft amendments, interpret/advise and prepare responses to technical issues.
• You can prepare presentations and deliver/participate in technical workshops and formal courses.
• You can effectively communicate technical issues to non-technical audiences.
• You have demonstrated consultative skills to relate with stakeholders in the industry, municipalities and ministry.
• You can provide expert advice and information to stakeholders.
• You have the ability to discuss and resolve client problems and provide superior service to both internal and external stakeholders.

Mediation and problem-solving skills:

• You have demonstrated mediation skills to resolve differences of opinion in the application of Ontario's Building Code.
• You use your problem-solving skills to suggest alternatives to technical design problems which meet both the intent and specifics of the Building Code.

Research, investigative and analytical skills:

• You have well-developed research, investigative and analytical skills to recommend changes to regulations in field of expertise.
• You can undertake research on new construction techniques and building materials and provide expert advice on the suitability of same.
