The Ministry of Transportation seeks an individual who will direct the activities of consultants, contractors and technical supervisory staff engaged in the construction and maintenance of transportation corridors, structures and related services within the boundaries of Northeastern Region.
About the job
Under the direction of the Regional Contracts Engineer, you will:
• manage a number of construction contracts and maintenance contracts
• direct activities of consultants, contractors and technical supervisory staff engaged in construction and maintenance of highways structures and services
• ensure material and staff resources are utilized efficiently
• provide technical and managerial guidance and advice to resolve engineering, maintenance and construction issues
• represent the ministry at committee meetings, contractor meetings, consultant meetings and meetings with maintenance providers
• carry out special projects and assignments related to Operations Office activities
What you bring to the team
Mandatory requirement:
• You must be licensed with the Professional Engineers of Ontario (PEO)Leadership skills:
• You have proven leadership and managerial skills to effectively supervise and develop professional, technical and support staff and resolve personnel problems and staff relations issues.
• You can provide contracts engineering guidance and resolve disputes with consultants and contractors.
• You have demonstrated ability to identify and provide direction in the resolution of complex and contentious issues.
• You have demonstrated ability to build and lead effective teams and the ability to recognize and use the full team potential.Civil engineering and construction knowledge:
• You have knowledge of civil engineering theories, principles and practices related to construction, and maintenance of highway facilities.
• You have experience in the design, maintenance and construction of transportation corridors and structures.
• You have knowledge of administrative and engineering policies, procedures and standards governing contract administration.Communication skills and stakeholder relations:
• You have effective communication skills to deal with ministry staff, contractors, utility companies, consultants, municipal officials, other agencies and the public.
• You have tact and diplomacy to discuss controversial or sensitive issues with the public, media, politicians and other stakeholders.
• You are able to establish and maintain sound effective stakeholder relationships.Financial and project management skills:
• You are well organized and can coordinate multiple activities in relation to construction projects and maintenance operations.
• You are able to work under pressure to meet deadlines and to make decisions independently with minimal supervision.
• You can negotiate financial commitments with consultants and contractors.Analytical skills:
• You use your strong analytical skills to assess recommendations for technical adequacy and consistency with government policies.
• You use your initiative and sound judgement to assess and solve complex engineering problems.
