Come join the Natural Heritage Information Centre (NHIC) and provide your expertise on collecting field data and authoring scientific reports on arthropod species in Ontario.

What can I expect to do in this role?

You will:

• research, mine data, archive information, liaise with experts and maintain taxonomic species lists for all known arthropod species in Ontario
• assist with the collection, management, review and updating of arthropod observations and element occurrences for Ontario
• conduct inventories and where necessary develop monitoring protocols for priority arthropod species in Ontario
• provide expert advice on the status, conditions, trends and threats of arthropod species in Ontario
• participate on provincial, national and international working groups, committees and networks

How do I qualify?

Mandatory requirements:

• You have a valid class ‘G' driver's licence or equivalent as recognized by the Province of Ontario.
• You possess or have the ability to obtain an Ontario Pleasure Craft Boat Operator's licence.

Scientific knowledge and field collection expertise:

• You have advanced knowledge and experience in natural resource conservation sciences, in particular zoology to effectively perform duties relating to scientific oversight and authority.
• You have extensive knowledge and experience using international taxonomic data standards and NatureServe Core Heritage Methodology to perform conservation status ranking.
• You have proven knowledge and field experience, specifically relating to Ontario's arthropod species and communities to effectively provide accurate data collection, inventory and monitoring.
• You have advanced species taxonomy, nomenclature and synonymy knowledge in order to maintain the provincial species listings of known arthropods.
• You have excellent field biology skills including skills in the identification of arthropod species and associated habitats and community types to perform field duties safely and efficiently.
• You have well developed skills in the capture, handling, preservation, labelling, storage and shipping of specimens.
• You have the ability to interpret and apply legislation, policies, procedures and programs as it relates to Ontario's arthropod species to provide advice on conservation policy and plans review.

Interpersonal and communication skills:

• You have interpersonal and scientific networking skills to provide and discuss scientific requirements with clients.
• You have oral communication and presentation skills to effectively deliver training, provide subject briefings and results to a wide range of audience.
• You can effectively produce and review documents to meet the scientific standards.

Research, analytical and problem-solving skills:

• You have spatial and tabular data management, mapping and analysis skills to verify and validate range and site related observations.
• You have advanced reasoning and problem-solving skills to identify priority knowledge targets of opportunity.
• You have research and literature review skills to identify arthropod data and knowledge mining opportunities.

Project management skills:

• You have demonstrated project management skills to design, implement and coordinate biological studies.
• You are proficient in the management of scientific references to effectively deliver on position scientific authority duties.
