About the job

In this role you will:
- Provide team leadership within the cooking operation for the correctional institution
- Provide direction and support to inmate helpers
- Prepare and assemble meals
- Maintain an inventory of supplies
- Ensure the safety and security of helpers, staff and equipment
- Maintain proper sanitary conditions in the kitchen area

What you bring to the team


Mandatory Requirements:

- You have a Cooks certificate issued by appropriate Ministry or demonstrated equivalent level of knowledge and experience necessary to be eligible to write certificate examination.
- You have a current First Aid and Heart-Saver Certificates

Technical Knowledge and Skills:

Your knowledge and skills will include:
- Large volume cooking and baking principles
- Standard cooking and food preparation
- Food storage procedures and methods
- Portion control standards and the proper use of kitchen equipment and tools
- Food safety practices

Other Essential Skills:

Your skills and abilities will include:

- Team leadership skills to provide instruction to subordinate helpers
- Communication skills, tact and diplomacy to work with ministry staff, inmate helpers and service providers
- Analytical and problem-solving skills to identify and assess workplace hazards, equipment malfunctions and food service issues
- Ability to acquire and apply knowledge of relevant legislation (i.e. Occupational Health and Safety Act, Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System)
- Written communication skills to prepare various reports
- Basic computer skills to input, track and record data
