About the job
In this position, you will:
• operate, troubleshoot, replace, repair and maintain all heating, ventilation, fire systems and associated electromechanical devices and subsystems
• check and repair air conditioning and boiler systems by computer
• check the boiler room on a daily basis as well as check the refrigeration system and conduct chemical tests
• operate and maintain pumps and burners, water softeners, kitchen items and grounds equipment
• replace and clean air and roll media filters as well as lubricate and tighten belts when necessary
• repair and maintain tubular steel furniture, water tanks, power plant equipment, security screens and steel structures as well as security and non-security locks
• perform emergency repairs in the absence of other maintenance staff and assist plumbers and electricians as required
• complete and maintain appropriate logs and records
• upkeep grounds by cutting grass and shoveling snow
What you bring to the team
Mandatory Requirements:
• you are certified in one of the skilled trades by the designated Ministry of the Ontario government or equivalent experience
Technical and Analytical Knowledge and Skills:
• you understand the techniques, equipment and tools used in the skilled trades (plumbing, electrical, welding, brick laying and carpentry) in order to perform major and minor repairs, renovations and construction projects
• you can perform a wide variety of maintenance tasks (i.e. painting, carpentry, welding, lock repair and HVAC maintenance)
• you can operate and maintain heating, ventilation, air conditioning, fire systems, instrumentation and control systems
• you can request and review information on all automated systems assigned by your supervisor and perform quality assurance checks
• you can interpret, organize and complete blueprints, schematics, specification diagrams and drawings
Legislative and Safety Knowledge and Skills:
• you can interpret and apply relevant legislation, municipal by-laws, codes and provincial building codes (i.e. ensure the safety and integrity of installations, prevent staff injuries and aid in determining appropriate work methods)
• you have knowledge of the governmental requirements for correctional facility security (i.e. lockouts, tagouts and elevated work procedures to ensure employee safety)
• you can recognize workplace hazards and security breaches to ensure prompt corrective action
• you understand and can apply the Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS), Occupational Health and Safety Act, and institutional security practices and procedures (i.e. ensure compliance with standards, proper equipment operation, utilization and maintenance of the safety and security of the work area)
• you have knowledge in environmental waste management regulations for both garbage and hazardous waste to ensure safe storage and disposal
Communication, Interpersonal and Computer Skills:
• you can discuss work projects with other trades personnel, liaise with correctional staff and ensure work in completed in a timely manner
• you can complete reports on assigned projects as well as complete reports for your supervisor and maintain accurate logs
• you can instruct employees in the safe use of power equipment and hand tools needed for repairs, renovation and construction
• you can access information on warranties and service agreements to prepare reports and respond to internal mail
• you are proficient with computers and computer systems related to monitoring automated systems (e.g. mechanical and electrical equipment, electronic locking systems, building environmental controls and fence security monitors, Closed Circuit TV)
