The Workplace Safety and Insurance Appeals Tribunal (WSIAT) has an opening for a bilingual (English/French) lawyer in its Tribunal Counsel Office. WSIAT is a specialized adjudicative tribunal which hears appeals from final decisions of the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board.
About the job
Working with a small, collegial group of lawyers, the position requires:
• Attending WSIAT hearings, questioning witnesses, making submissions
• Representing the Tribunal in judicial review applications and various court-related matters
• Conducting pre-hearing and post-hearing inquiries
• Mediating issues
• Acting as a resource for Tribunal legal workers
• Responding to inquiries from parties and representatives
• Providing legal advice and representation as required by WSIAT
What you bring to the team
Mandatory requirements
• Licenced to practise law by the Law Society of Upper Canada
• Proficiency in English and French at the advanced level
Knowledge & Skills
The successful candidate will have:
• Knowledge of Ontario workplace safety and insurance law
• Extensive experience in litigation in Ontario courts, including drafting and appearing on applications for judicial review, motions, actions, and discoveries, to be able to represent the Tribunal in judicial review applications and various court-related matters
• Knowledge of principles of Canadian administrative law and experience in the practice of Canadian administrative law
• Superior analytical skills for complex legal and medical issues
• Superior research and written communications skills
• Tact, sensitivity to concerns of injured workers and employers
• Ability to act in a neutral role in WSIAT hearings
• Outstanding interpersonal skills.
