The Ottawa-Carleton Detention Centre is a 326-bed maximum security detention centre housing both male and female inmates. Health care services are provided 24 hours per day, 7 days per week.

About the job

In this role, you will use your knowledge and skills to provide patient-centered nursing care to inmates.

Specifically, you will:
• provide direct nursing services which comply with accepted standards of practice and provide supervision to general duty nurses
• ensure appropriate treatment implementation including safety of offenders
• ensure security of health care area
• report observations to manager that may affect programs and offender activities
• ensure compliance with health care standards and offenders rights are adhered to
• ensure compliance when performing group leadership responsibilities
• assess and resolve emergency situations and evaluate offenders' responses to planned health care interventions
• inform other institutional staff regarding offender treatment, explaining symptoms of illness, course of treatment and expected results
• provide information sessions to subordinates and other health care professionals
• prepare reports and statistics and to document performance of nursing staff
• advocate health care services on behalf of offenders

What you bring to the team


Mandatory Requirements:

• you must be registered with the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) as a Registered Nurse (RN) and be in good standing

Technical Knowledge, Organizational and Time Management Skills:

Technical and Legislative Knowledge and Skills:
• you have knowledge of general nursing theory, practice and procedures and College of Nurses of Ontario standards of practice. Knowledge of institutional and health care policies and procedures
• you can interpret and apply relevant legislation (i.e. Regulated Health Care Professions Act, Health Care Consent Act, Personal Health Information Protection Act)
• you have knowledge of institutional and health care policies and procedures
• you can recognize potential or actual danger to health and safety in the workplace
• you are able to prioritize effectively in a fast-paced and complex environment

Analytical and Problem Solving Skills:

• you are able to respond effectively in emergency or unpredictable situations and implement interventions
• you can elicit, interpret and evaluate information obtained from patients and other sources, identifying the health problems, and drawing conclusions to develop a plan of care
• you can evaluate responses to planned interventions and modify the care plan in collaboration with the inter-professional team to achieve established goals

Communication, Interpersonal and Computer Skills:

• you can interpret and clarify information about health care treatments to inmates and institution employees
• you are an effective patient advocate
• you can work collaboratively with others, such as the inter-professional team, other correctional staff and community agencies using tact and diplomacy
• you can prepare and present training information in a clear and concise manner
• you are proficient with various computer software applications and databases (i.e. spreadsheet, email, word processing)
