As an integral member of a dynamic, collaborative team with the fire management program, you will have the opportunity to help meet our increasing future fire management challenges.
Sioux Lookout has a population of approximately 5,200 located on the CN main line and hub to 14 First Nation communities to the far north. Sioux Lookout offers a public and separate primary school system and a secondary school. The community has excellent recreation facilities – arena/fitness centre, golf and curling club, fishing and hunting opportunities. Medical facilities include two hospitals, medical clinic and dental services. Churches of most denominations are represented. The town is serviced by Hwy 72 off of the TransCanada Highway and by the second busiest airport in northwestern Ontario.
What can I expect to do in this role?
• lead, plan, coordinate and implement the operational and technical aspects of the fire management program
• lead a team of professional and technical staff
• build strong partnerships and stakeholder involvement and awareness in fire management strategies and tactics, prevention and fuel management activities
How do I qualify?
Mandatory requirement:
• valid class G driver's licence or equivalent as recognized by the province of Ontario to travel to locations not accessible by public transit
Leadership skills:
• demonstrated leadership skills to lead, manage, plan and coordinate operational and technical aspects of the fire management program
• knowledge of supervisory techniques to foster a team environment to deliver results
• demonstrated skills in managing budgets and all components of human resources
Technical knowledge and skills:
• knowledge of fire behaviour, fire ecology and impacts of fire on landscape, suppression strategies, prescribed burning, weather indices and suppression equipment capabilities and requirements on fires
• ability to interpret and apply relevant legislation such as the Forest Fires Prevention Act, Occupational Health and Safety Act and other regulations and guidelines
• demonstrated technical skills and knowledge of resource management theories and practices
Stakeholder relations and communication skills:
• ability to build and maintain relationships across the organization as well as external partners
• interpersonal, presentation and communication skills to prepare short and long range plans, reports and to provide customer service, make presentations, hold open houses and deliver training courses, workshops and seminars
Decision making and judgment skills:
• proven decision making and judgment skills to carry out command and control responsibilities
• ability to make decisions in critical and time sensitive situations
General skills:
• understanding of administrative and financial functions
• ability to prepare work plan, provide program delivery and work within financial controls and guidelines
• ability to travel to locations not accessible by public transit
