About the job
• provide group leadership, technical guidance and coordination of Fire Ranger crews
• assist in the planning and implementation of the regional fire management program that includes training, prevention, prescribed burning, suppression and equipment maintenance and development
• promote and enhance the safety management system
• work in progressively challenging fire line assignments such as sector leader or division supervisor
• act in the Sector Response Officer function as required
What you bring to the team
Mandatory requirements
• You are qualified at a minimum of Fire Incident Commander Level 4 (requires Initial Attack Incident Commander Course SP300 or equivalent).
• You have the physical ability to meet the demands of fire suppression activities.
• You are able to travel and can work for extended periods of time in adverse weather conditions.
• You possess or have the ability to obtain a restricted radio-telephone operator's certificate.
• You have a valid driver's licence as recognized in the province of Ontario.
Group leadership and people skills:
• You have proven group leadership skills.
• You have strong interpersonal, presentation, and communication skills.
• You have demonstrated analytical, planning, and coordination skills.
Technical knowledge:
• You have initiative and the ability to assimilate new fire suppression strategies, tactics and techniques in a variety of fire control circumstances, and to understand and meet objectives with available resources.
• You have knowledge of aerial operations, and fire behaviour and predictions.
• You have knowledge of and ability to operate and maintain forest fire suppression equipment and related equipment including pumps and chainsaws.
• You have knowledge of and can apply relevant legislation such as the Forest Fires Prevention Act and other related acts, legislation, policies and procedures.
General skills:
• You have the ability to use geographic information systems (GIS) and global position systems (GPS).
• You have working knowledge of computer applications and word processing, databases, internet, electronic mail software and decision support systems.
• You have an understanding of worker and supervisor responsibilities as outlined in the Occupational Health and Safety Act.
