The Ministry of Education, Ernest C. Drury School for the Deaf, requires an ASL/English Interpreter to provide interpreting services in educational, residential, support and resource services programs for students and staff who do not share the same language, culture or communication method.

About the job

• Provide interpretation services for individual Deaf students and/or groups of Deaf students in various classroom settings.
• Facilitate communication for Deaf students during extracurricular and special activities.
• Provide interpretation services for administrative and professional staff in sensitive and demanding situations.
• Provide interpretation services for school training sessions and workshops.

What you bring to the team


Mandatory:

• Graduation from an Interpreter Training Program

Knowledge and Skills:

Your background and experience enables you to meet the following requirements:

• Knowledge of or experience working with the Provincial Schools Branch preferred.
• Ability to interpret in a wide range of formal, informal, educational and professional settings.
• Knowledge and understanding of the Professional Code of Ethics (i.e. Association of Visual Language Interpreters of Canada) and the Ontario Association of Sign Language Interpreters (OASLI), fluency in American Sign Language (ASL) and Deaf culture.
• Excellent language skills including proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL) including receptive and expressive skills and spoken English.
• Demonstrated familiarity with other communication preferences and issues (i.e. oral/total communication including various sign systems).
• Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills.
• Experience interpreting in both small and large group settings.
• Ability to operate a fully programmable computer.
• An Interpreter proficiency test will be administered during the interview process
