Are you an experienced food service professional? If so, consider bringing your culinary expertise to the Ontario Correctional Institute.

Please note: this is a Line Cook's position with irregular, on-call hours (0 - 40.00 hours per week). There is no guaranteed or set scheduled hours each week.

What can I expect to do in this role?

In this role you will:
• Provide direction and support to inmate helpers
• Prepare and assemble meals
• Maintain an inventory of supplies
• Ensure the safety and security of helpers, staff and equipment
• Maintain proper sanitary conditions in the kitchen area

How do I qualify?

Mandatory Requirement

• You possess a Cook certification issued by appropriate ministry/college as well as Food Handler Certification

Specialized Knowledge and Experience

• You have knowledge of cooking methods/procedures, food preparation/storage practices, portion control standards, and Food Service Guidelines
• You are able to prepare a variety of foods and accommodate diverse dietary needs
• You have experience with volume or industrial cooking and baking
• You can use commercial/industrial kitchen equipment and tools to prepare food and meals as well as instruct others on proper usage
• You have knowledge of kitchen and workplace health and safety (such as the Public Health Act, Occupational Health and Safety Act, Health Protection and Promotion Act, Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS), etc.)
• You are able to ensure compliance with standards/regulations on food preparation/storage, sanitation, food safety, proper equipment operation/utilization, etc.

Other Essential Skills

• You have good communication and interpersonal skills in order to work with other staff as well as instruct, train, supervise and control inmate kitchen workers
• You have written communication skills to identify and assess workplace hazards, equipment malfunctions and food service issues
• You have basic proficiency with computers to input, track and record data
