Environment and Land Tribunals Ontario (ELTO) seeks a strategic thinker with highly developed leadership skills and expertise in environmental law to:

1. Effectively manage the legal services unit, the provision of legal advisory services and legal and contractual risks, and
2. Specifically provide legal advice to the Environmental Review Tribunal (ERT)

About the job

Duties will include:

• Providing and overseeing the provision of expert legal services and advice to the Executive Chair, Associate Chairs, Vice Chairs, Tribunal members, and case management staff and management teams
• Supervising and leading a team of legal professionals to maintain and enhance the quality, consistency and coherence of ELTO's adjudicative processes and decisions
• Conducting in-depth legal research and providing legal expert advice to the Associate Chair and Members of the ERT
• Representing and promoting ELTO in professional and public fora and as necessary to represent tribunals before the courts

Membership in good standing with the Law Society of Upper Canada

Knowledge and Skills

• Demonstrated legal management/leadership experience and the ability to lead transformation initiatives
• Proven client service, communication and presentation skills
• Demonstrated negotiation and problem-solving skills
• Ability to provide innovative solutions and manage complex issues and changing priorities
• Demonstrated knowledge and experience in administrative law and administrative justice principles, practices and procedures, including Rules of Procedure and alternative adjudicative processes
• Demonstrated experience, knowledge and expertise in environmental law
• Demonstrated success in managing and conducting litigation matters before the courts and tribunals
• Knowledge and ability to supervise the practice of law related to ELTO's mandate
• Knowledge of principles, policies, processes and procedures related to financial management and HR administration including collective agreements
