Eastern Region seeks self-motivated individual(s) with knowledge and experience in road repair and maintenance to deliver winter and summer maintenance in the Ottawa area.

What can I expect to do in this role?

In this position you will:
• perform summer/winter road patrolling
• monitor roadway conditions to ensure any hazards and/or deficiencies are addressed,
• mobilize hired equipment and resources as required to ensure established level of service criteria are met,
• inspect work performed by contractors to ensure compliance to standards and contractual agreements, and
• undertake/support various maintenance activities as required.

Note:
• The positions are for up to 2 years on a Seasonal (Oct 1 – April 30) basis at the 7 patrol yards listed above. And;
• During the winter season you will be required to work rotating shifts on a 24 hr / 7 day per week basis.

How do I qualify?

Mandatory:

• You possess a valid class G driver's license or equivalent as recognized by the Province of Ontario.

Technical Knowledge:

• You have knowledge of summer and winter highway maintenance operations and related quality standards and best practices.
• You have knowledge of general construction practices (e.g. plan reading for drainage, pavement and road surface maintenance, to ensure work is completed according to specifications).
• You have knowledge of contract administration procedures to ensure the effective and efficient delivery of contracted services.
• You have knowledge of first aid, transportation of dangerous goods, Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) and job related aspects of occupational health and safety.
• You have knowledge and understanding of maintenance information for inputting and tracking of daily work operations and of standard desktop applications to manage email correspondence, spreadsheets, databases and conduct Internet/intranet searches.

Communication Skills:

• You have oral communication skills to effectively communicate with contractors, the public, colleagues and managers,
• You have written communication skills to prepare reports and complete records such as patrol diaries, incident reports and daily work records.

Organizational and Problem Solving Skills:

• You have reasoning and problem solving skills to evaluate situations and decide on a course of action during winter and summer maintenance activities and incident management
• You have planning and coordinating skills to assist with organizing the work on the patrol, including coordination of necessary materials, equipment, and adjusting on a daily basis as accidents and weather conditions impact planned operations.
