Do you want to play a critical role in the development of leading edge techniques used to analyze environmental samples? Then consider this opportunity to showcase your expertise in providing scientific direction, and guidance and expertise to design, develop, conduct and modify and direct the application of new analytical systems

What can I expect to do in this role?

You will be required:
•To serve as the Ministry's resource, scientific expert and spokesperson in the area of environmental analytical chemistry, specifically organic chemistry
•To provide scientific direction, guidance and expertise to design, develop, and implement analytical systems used for conducting organic laboratory analyses
•To provide scientific leadership at a senior level to the applied research aligned with the branch and division's operational mandate.
•To consult with scientific peers in universities and other institutions across Canada, the US and abroad.

How do I qualify?

Mandatory

•Graduate degree, at PhD level, in Chemistry.
•The incumbent must have achieved international recognition as an authority in own field in order to be classified at the Research Scientist 5 level.

Scientific Knowledge

•Strong technical/scientific knowledge, skills and experience to develop, lead and oversee new projects for known and unknown emerging organic contaminants. This includes project design, project management and oversight to completion.
•Extensive knowledge and experience of the theories, instruments, principles and practices of environmental and organic chemistry, including GC, GCxGC,GCMS, GCMSMS, GCHRMS, LCMSMS, LCHRMS.
•You have knowledge of applicable and available software (e.g. using LIMS, Excel and Access programs) and hardware, including instrumental control programs, networking theories, and data manipulation packages
• You have extensive knowledge and proven experience of current environmental risks both globally and locally to Ontario and the Great Lakes

Leadership Skills

•Strong leadership skills in technical and scientific areas of organic and environmental pollutants, Proven ability to lead and mentor staff. The position will be required to oversee and direct method development work by scientists, technologists and students (including post-docs and graduates).
•Leads and engages staff in support of strategic projects that support the government
•Demonstrated experience in training and developing training programs, as supervisor/co-supervisor to graduate students and/or as adjunct professor. This also could have been done within previous work experience or leading scientific organizations, not limited to just academia.

Teamwork and stakeholder relationships

•Broad demonstrated knowledge and experience collaborating on multiple method development/applied research projects often in multiple disciplines, with primary strength in organic chemistry.
•Ability to lead multiple complex projects simultaneously and develop original research ideas. Consult with scientific colleagues and maintain branch knowledge base
•Works collaboratively with broad range of government, academic and private sector partners providing expertise guidance as a recognized expert both internal to the organization and internationally
•Demonstrated ability to lead scientific committees and working groups

Other Skills

•Strong demonstrated communications skills – written and verbal – as the position requires writing and delivering academic papers, presentations, proposals to broad range of audiences.
•Ability to communicate technical information to a broad range of audiences, including Directors, Assistant Deputy Ministers (ADM) and Deputy Ministers
•You have knowledge of statistics, experimental design, reliability theory and quality management principles to design and implement data management procedures and ensure data quality, e.g. proving equivalence or superiority of methods
