What can I expect to do in this role?
The Exceptional Access Program Branch of the Ministry of Health and Long-term Care has a number of summer opportunities for students with a background in clinical pharmacy. The Exceptional Access Program (EAP) facilitates patient access in exceptional circumstances to drugs not funded on the Ontario Drug Benefit (ODB) Formulary, or where no listed alternative is available.
Work Description:
As a Clinical Review Pharmacy Assessor, you will be working closely with a dynamic and dedicated team of pharmacists, technicians, and support staff to assist in the processing, assessment, and review of drug funding submissions from across the province.
Some of the responsibilities of this role may include (but are not limited to):
- Data interpretation, classification, verification, and information processing of clinical submissions.
- Assist the EAP team with the assessment of requests for the funding of non-formulary drugs based on clinical information provided and established criteria.
- Respond to inquiries from physician offices and other health professionals through verbal or written communication.
- Respond to and process calls from physicians and/or their delegates on EAP's Telephone Request Service (TRS).
- Note: Students that have completed their third year of university in a recognized pharmacy program are preferred.
How do I qualify?
Mandatory
You must meet all eligibility criteria on the first day of employment to be eligible for these positions.
- Student Status: All summer jobs require a “student” status. A student is defined as someone enrolled in a secondary or post-secondary institution (currently or for the fall semester) or has graduated within the past six months. If you graduated in January, you could apply for and start a summer student position in the Ontario Public Service up until June of that year.
- Age: You must be a minimum of 15 years of age. Due to program eligibility requirements, certain opportunities require students to be up to 24 years of age (or up to 29 years of age for a person with a disability). Certain positions require you to be a minimum of 18 years of age. You must meet all age requirements for the position by May 1, 2017.
- Residency: You must be a resident of Ontario during the term of employment.
- Work Status – Ability to Work in Canada: You much be legally entitled to work in Canada. You are also required to have a valid Social Insurance Number (SIN) upon being hired.
Communication and Interpersonal Skills
- You apply your written communication skills to document findings and prepare a variety of documents (e.g. reports, data records, presentations, meeting minutes, etc.).
- You apply your customer service and verbal, written, and active listening communication skills to respond to phone, email, and in-person inquiries, and provide information to internal clients and/or the public.
Technical Skills and Knowledge
- You apply your experience using Microsoft Office applications, such as Word (word processing) and Excel (spreadsheets), as well as databases, email, and the internet to conduct research and prepare a variety of documents.
- You apply your knowledge and/or experience in writing, editing and proofreading various communication documents.
- You have a working knowledge of a variety of internet resources for drug information.
Analytical and Organizational Skills
- You are able to work independently or as part of a team; you plan, organize and prioritize your time to meet competing deadlines.
- You apply your excellent organizational and time management skills to meet timelines and work effectively within a fast paced environment.

Other Requirements
- You are a Pharmacy Student who is eligible to graduate with a Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy, and you are familiar with Ontario/Canadian Pharmacy regulations.
