What can I expect to do in this role?

Ontario Parks offers two exciting educational programs called Learn to Camp and Learn to Fish. These unique programs engage people in outdoor activities by providing hands-on learning opportunities related to camping and fishing. Program leaders are needed to introduce new people to camping and fishing in Ontario. The successful candidates will work in a team to lead all aspects of the Learn to Camp/Learn to Fish programs, including organizing and conducting teaching sessions, maintenance and inventory of equipment and supplies, and providing support to program marketing activities.

Work Description:
As a Learn to Camp/Learn to Fish Program Leader, you may have the opportunity to work on some or all of the following activities:

  • Prepare and deliver teaching sessions based on an established curriculum.

  • Maintain, track, and manage all equipment required for program delivery.

  • Maintain accurate records (e.g. equipment inventory, attendance records) and complete post-program reports.

  • Deliver presentations to park visitors and local community groups.

  • Support program marketing activities locally and provincially (e.g. lead promotional events, develop content for online posting and e-newsletters, take group photos and video footage, and support media coverage).

How do I qualify?


You must meet all eligibility criteria on the first day of employment to be eligible for these positions.

  1. Student Status: All summer jobs require a “student” status. A student is defined as someone enrolled in a secondary or post-secondary institution (currently or for the fall semester) or has graduated within the past six months. If you graduated in January, you could apply for and start a summer student position in the Ontario Public Service up until June of that year.

  2. Age: You must be a minimum of 15 years of age. Due to program eligibility requirements, certain opportunities require students to be up to 24 years of age (or up to 29 years of age for a person with a disability). Certain positions require you to be a minimum of 18 years of age. Age parameters will be provided on the job advertisements and you must meet all age requirements by May 1st.

  3. Residency: You must be a resident of Ontario during the term of employment.

  4. Work Status – Ability to Work in Canada: You must be legally entitled to work in Canada. You are also required to have a valid Social Insurance Number (SIN) upon being hired.

Communication and Interpersonal Skills

  • You apply your written communication skills to document findings and prepare a variety of documents (e.g. reports, data records, presentations, meeting minutes, training materials, visual aids, etc.).

  • You apply your customer service and verbal, written, and active listening communication skills to perform reception duties, respond to phone, email, and in-person inquiries, and provide information to internal clients and/or the public.

  • You apply your initiative and interpersonal skills to work collaboratively within a multi-disciplinary team.

Technical Skills and Knowledge

  • You apply your extensive knowledge of camping/fishing practices and equipment during teaching sessions, and are able to lead diverse groups of people with varying needs through creative, engaging, and fun teaching sessions.

  • You are comfortable working outdoors leading large groups of participants in a campground or lakeside setting for extended periods of time.

  • You apply your marketing/promotional/creative knowledge and/or experience to produce promotional materials for the program.

  • You have experience with and/or general knowledge of the Ontario Parks system (e.g. role, priorities, rules and regulations, specific parks, and fishing regulations).

  • You apply your technical knowledge of a variety of software applications and computer hardware to support program activities (e.g. registration tracking, creation of promotional materials, etc.).

Analytical and Organizational Skills

  • You apply your organizational skills to track and manage program equipment.

  • You plan, organize, track, and prioritize multiple duties (e.g. overnight programs, community presentations, marketing activities, tracking inventory/attendance) and meet competing deadlines.

  • You apply your research and analytical skills to gather, assess, and summarize information, and develop options.

  • You exercise your good judgement while working under minimal supervision.

  • You are able to adapt programs to changing circumstances (e.g. late arrivals, inclement weather conditions).

Other Requirements

  • Certain positions require that you have a valid Ontario G2 (or higher) Driver's Licence or equivalent. (Knowledge or experience operating a vehicle with a trailer is considered an asset.)

  • Certain positions require that you have certification in Standard First Aid and CPR.

  • You are willing and able to work shifts and weekends with an irregular work schedule up to 40 hours/week, and to work in an outdoor environment.
