The Northern Development Division is responsible for delivering Ontario government programs, services and information across the North, promoting economic growth and investment in Northern Ontario, ensuring that government policies and programs reflect a northern perspective, gathering input from northern stakeholders and keeping them informed of government initiatives affecting Northern Ontario.

Reporting to Assistant Deputy Minister, Northern Development and accountable to the Board of Directors of the NOHFC, the Executive Director is responsible for the strategic, management, and daily operation of the NOHFC, a one hundred million dollar economic development fund.

What can I expect to do in this role?

In this critical senior management role, you will work closely with board members and ministry representatives to:

• Establish, implement, and report on the direction and strategic priorities for the corporation
• Ensure that sound economic development proposals are brought forward to the board and implemented effectively
• Ensure the board is governed and supported effectively
• Ensure financial management of the corporation complies with the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Act and related government directives
• Collaborate with all levels of government and a wide range of northern Ontario communities, businesses and other stakeholders to influence co-operation and partnerships, address sensitive issues that require a high degree of political acuity and raise awareness of the NOHFC.

How do I qualify?

Senior Leadership:

• You are a senior executive with demonstrated success in a team environment supporting economic development.
• You have demonstrated strategic leadership in an operational or program-delivery environment, including the ability to lead strategic transformation.
• You have a collaborative leadership style and recognize the value of working horizontally both internally and externally.
• You are familiar with decision-making structures in the public sector.
• You are an engaging leader who promotes diversity, inclusion and equity in the workplace.

Relationship Management:

• You have proven ability to connect with and strengthen alliances with stakeholders such as industry, municipalities, the broader public sector, innovators, and First Nations.
• You have highly developed communication skills to represent the Province and have credibility and relationships developed within Northern Ontario.
• You can develop solutions to issues and thoughtful feedback to policy development that consider impacts northern Ontario.
• You have extensive experience engaging, building and maintaining relationships with internal and external stakeholders and communicating and influencing across a broad spectrum of organizations.

Northern Development Knowledge:

• Your background includes experience leading economic development and community development initiatives.
• You understand business expansion, development and innovation, and are experienced in attracting new business to Northern communities.
• You have gained significant knowledge of Northern Ontario perspectives, geography, demographics and economic and social development issues.

Technical Knowledge:

• You have strong financial acumen and experience, including experience with financial management and controllership.
• You have exceptional oral and written communications skills, with the ability to develop and present information effectively to senior management, individuals and groups.
• You have effectively demonstrated the ability to manage and solve complex issues together with advanced political acuity.

  • • Please note that as of October 1, 2017 the new salary range for this position is $130,930 - $164,930.

    • Location: Sault Ste. Marie with extensive travel required throughout Northern Ontario in order to meet clients, stakeholders and government officials.
