The Centre hosts up to a million visitors each year, and offers hands-on experiences and insights into science and technology that help visitors of all ages understand and contribute to the world around us.
Play a key role in supporting the design and development of unique science exhibits for the Ontario Science Centre and for international clients. As an Exhibit Designer, you will be developing drawings and production details for fabrication and installation of exhibits; drafting exhibition layouts for spaces; and producing three-dimensional designs of exhibits.
About the job
You will:
• Provide thoughtful and engaging exhibit design to relay complex scientific concepts.
• Prepare conceptual renderings and more detailed designs for use during fabrication using various drawing techniques including specialized software.
• Ensure unique exhibit design solutions are carried out in a manner that fosters creative thinking among team members, inspires their professional growth and encourages new directions in exhibit design problem solving.
• Plan and execute workflow with team members to ensure projects are completed on time and on budget.
• Develop exhibit standards and estimate costs, monitor quality and determine materials palette as well as produce and test exhibit prototypes.
What you bring to the team
Technical Knowledge & Skills
• Expert knowledge and application of industrial and/or environmental design work and its principles.
• Advanced experience in and knowledge of interactive device design, interface principles, affordance principles, and human behaviours related to use of three-dimensional devices, and graphic communication.
• Demonstrated technical skills to use various software application work tools such as: AutoCAD, Sketchup and other industry applicable software.
• Ability to produce technical specifications for formal documentation on exhibits.
• Strong understanding of materials and sustainable design approaches.
Communication and Interpersonal Skills
• Extensive experience in the communication of complex scientific or technological concepts and in the various techniques used in the field of exhibitions, museology and audio visual.
• Communication and interpersonal skills to liaise with fabricators, design group and project leaders to make sure that final plans are accurate and meet the intent of the design.
• Demonstrated communication skills to provide documentation, detailed instructions, drawings, or specifications informing others about how devices, parts, equipment, or structures are to be fabricated, constructed, assembled, modified, maintained, or used.
• Ability to collaborate with team members in order to develop drawings for fabrication that are consistent with the overall plan and concept of the exhibit.
• Demonstrated strong creative and innovative experience in the communication concepts within a public environment
• Contribute ideas on types of drawings and production details, design changes, fabrication and installation processes to help convey and communicate scientific phenomena to the general public.
Attention to Detail and Planning Skills
• Demonstrates attention-to-detail to ensure plans are technically accurate to the outlined specifications and completed in a timeframe that is compatible with project plan.
• Mathematical and financial skills to estimate build/materials requirements and costs
• Planning and coordination skills to organize work processes to meet schedules and project timelines.
