Are you interested in a challenging opportunity that ensures Ontario mines are properly rehabilitated to public safety and environmental standards upon closure?

If you are a professional engineer with a sound knowledge of and experience in mine rehabilitation and engineering science consider this position with the Ministry of Energy, Northern Development and Mines.

What can I expect to do in this role?

You will:
• plan, organize and manage the tendering process and recommend final acceptance
• review and analyze engineering designs and prepare documents, reports and data for sites
• design, conduct and/or coordinate surveys and engineering/technical investigations
• coordinate compliance audits and action plans for mine closures
• ensure compliance with environmental legislation and ministry standards and guidelines
• provide testimony before court and judicial hearings
• provide professional technical advice and training to staff

Note: This position requires travel to areas not accessible by public transit.

How do I qualify?

Mandatory

• You are a Professional Engineer, licensed with the Association of Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO).

Environmental and engineering knowledge:

• You know and have experience applying the theories, principles and practices of engineering science.
• You have specialized knowledge in civil, chemical or environmental engineering.
• You can interpret and apply environmental legislation and regulations (e.g. Mining Act and Environmental Protection Act, Ontario Water Resources Act, Environmental Assessment Act and Environmental Bill of Rights).
• You have related experience in pollution control, mine rehabilitation theories and practices.
• You know environmental trends and developments in the academic and engineering communities.
• You have technical expertise to identify sources of water, air and solid pollutants from complex mine closure projects.

Analytical, project management, and organizational skills:

• You can analyze complex information in great detail.
• You can develop appropriate solutions to problems.
• You have project management and planning experience.
• You have strong team leadership and professional judgement skills.
• You have knowledge of rules of evidence and court procedures to conduct investigations.
• You are highly organized to effectively manage assigned projects/issues.

Communication and interpersonal skills:

• You engage in consultations to build consensus among clients and stakeholders.
• You have the ability to provide advice to internal and external stakeholders.
• You have the ability to liaise and make presentations to regulatory agencies, site owners, officials, and/or other concerned parties.
• You have the ability to respond to enquiries and complaints from the public with tact and diplomacy.

Computer Skills:

• You have knowledge of office computer software including word processing, spreadsheets and database packages to assess data,
conduct analysis and prepare reports and presentations.
