Fort William Historical Park (FWHP) is one of the largest living history attractions in North America. The park provides cultural, heritage, entertainment and educational experiences for residents and visitors to Northwestern Ontario.

We have a unique opportunity for an enthusiastic individual to perform various historic skilled trades exhibited at the Park. We offer creative, challenging and hands-on work, and an opportunity for you to learn old world period trades from specialized tradespersons.

PLEASE NOTE: This position may require you to attend overnight functions, travel to out of town events and off-hour programs, and work on holidays and weekends.

What can I expect to do in this role?

In this role, you will:

• receive specialized technical training from the Cooper, Armourer/Blacksmith, Canoe Builder/Shipwright and Tinsmith in various historic skilled trades
• provide skilled tradesperson support, and assume increased responsibility to work alone and demonstrate skills to clients and visitors
• participate in the demonstration of methods, techniques, tools and materials utilized in the early 19th century
• participate in historical demonstrations, pageants, festivals, special events, education and outreach programs

How do I qualify?

Mandatory

• You must possess a valid class G driver's licence or equivalent, as recognized by the Province of Ontario.

Technical expertise:

• You can provide support to specialized tradespersons (e.g., Cooper, Armourer/Blacksmith, Canoe Builder/Shipwright and Tinsmith).
• You can accurately use period and contemporary techniques, tools, machinery, equipment and materials.
• You have mechanical skills, manual dexterity and trades aptitude to be competent in a diverse set of 19th century trades skills.

Analytical and organizational skills:

• You can follow instructions and procedures, and have attention to detail to ensure work is performed in accordance with established standards.
• You can organize workload, and provide support to multiple tradespersons.

Communication and interpersonal skills:

• You can interact effectively with the public, and participle in interpretive demonstrations.
• You are comfortable with public speaking and performing in front of a crowd.

Program knowledge:

• You have basic knowledge of the role of 19th century artisans.
• You have knowledge of FWHP programs and services.

Health and safety knowledge:

• You are able to interpret and apply the Occupational Health and Safety Act, and other relevant legislation and regulations.
• You are able to apply health and safety measures, including those pertaining to the handling of various trades-related materials.
