This is a temporary opportunity for up to 12 months.
Job Summary:
Under the guidance and direction of a lawyer, perform certain legal services in an expert, timely and responsive manner and maintain confidentiality of privileged and/or sensitive information. Practice area is almost exclusively focused on labour/employment law and human rights litigation, but may also include a limited amount of other work, as described below. Also provides a broad range of general/specific legal services as a licensed paralegal for the legal services program of the WSIB.

What can I expect to do in this role?

Primary Responsibilities:
1. Participate in Employment/Labour law by:
• Preparing materials for, and attending, either independently or in a supporting role, hearings before the Grievance Settlement Board, Human Rights Tribunal, WSIB Appeals Services Branc and WSIAT.
• Preparing all required pleadings and documented evidence and filing them within the legislated timelines; preparing and filing all subsequent documentation for motions, mediations and trials.
• Interviewing parties involved, prepare witnesses for hearings.
• Preparing employment related agreements (including those related to grievance settlements, secondments, terminations and voluntary exits) for review by supervising lawyer.

Potential Other Responsibilities:
2. Review, draft and amend contracts
3. Undertake litigation activities involving the WSIB, including lawsuits by and against the WSIB, and provincial offence matters prosecuted by the WSIB
4. Undertake the enforcement of the collection of debts by:
5. Function as an individual contributor and as a member of a team(s) in Legal Services to ensure that personal, team and branch goals are established and met on a timely basis and co-ordinate work with other team members to ensure consistency and quality of legal services provided by:
• Acting in the capacity of Commissioner of Oaths for the WSIB, reviewing and monitoring Bankruptcy Court files, preparing and/or filing documents with court offices and trustees, and monitoring hearings and trials, as directed.
• Undertaking legal research via libraries, internet, legal publications and other sources. Conducting searches such as corporation and business names, real estate, copyright, licenses, bankruptcy and domain names.
• Reviewing legal documents, such as Powers of Attorney and providing opinions on their validity based on the relevant legislation to WSIB staff

How do I qualify?

JOB REQUIREMENTS:

1. Education:
• Successful completion of an accredited paralegal education program
• Paralegal license, member in good standing with the Law Society of Upper Canada
2. Experience:
• 2-3 years of paralegal or law clerk work in a legal environment
• As a precondition of employment, the WSIB will require a prospective candidate to undergo a criminal records name check prior to or at any time following hire.
