About the job
This position is a key contributor to the ongoing business viability of the Science Centre and by applying your financial expertise, you will:
- manage and oversee the Science Centre's accounts-related activities including financial planning, analysis and control, revenue control, and purchasing control
- lead the department's reporting activities, including financial statements, and analysis of cash flows and financial solvency
- maintain the integrity of the Science Centre's financial system to ensure accurate recording and reporting
- provide strategic advice to management with respect to effective and efficient accounting practices.
What you bring to the team
Leadership and Organizational Skills
You can:
- Provide leadership and technical guidance to department staff by setting and communicating standards, assigning and reviewing work, and monitoring progress..
- Provide leadership in the development and implementation of financial procedures and controls, including control of organizational assets and support for business planning. .
- Effectively plan and coordinate operations with other areas including developing work plans to meet program objectives and administer program operations on a timely basis. .
- Deal with priorities, tight time pressures and unexpected changes in deadlines.
Accounting and Financial Knowledge
You have knowledge of:
- Theories, principles and practices of accounting and financial administration such as Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and accounting to support preparation of budgets, financial analyses, general ledger entries and financial statements.
- Management of automated financial tracking systems through the development of system controls, operational controls, and standard procedures including the ability to develop reports, spreadsheets and analytical programs to monitor and test controls and present key information.
- Quality assurance principles and practices to ensure that financial controls meet accounting/business standards, related legislation and established practices.
- Delegations of financial authority for approval of contracts, payments and revenue management to ensure effective management of accounts payable and accounts receivable processes.
- Governing legislation, policies, systems and practices and relevant Provincial and Federal Tax laws and revisions relating to nonprofit and government organizations.
Communication and Consultation Skills
You demonstrate:
- Communication, consultation and interpersonal skills when interpreting financial policy and procedures and when providing advice and guidance on financial management matters.
- Persuasion and negotiation skills when obtaining or exchanging information, discussing pricing, and when resolving problems and delays in deliveries and services.
- Oral communication skills when liaising with program staff to exchange information and to provide advice on compliance with policies, procedures and practices.
- Written communication skills to prepare reports, business cases, planning documents, correspondence and presentations.
Analytical, Research and Problem-Solving Skills
You have:
- Effective problem solving skills to determine the appropriate solution to financial and administrative problems arising from conflicting demands.
- Analytical skills to identify potential impacts, options and proposed courses of action.
- Research skills to provide recommendations for improvement to systems and processes using new technology and alternate service delivery methods.
- Investigative skills to provide advice and interpretation of financial/budgeting/purchasing and travel directives, policies and guidelines.
