Bring your fisheries expertise to the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry's Upper Great Lakes Management Unit, in the role of Fisheries Technician.

What can I expect to do in this role?

In this role, you will:

• assists in the delivery of field surveys
• perform biological examination of fish
• provide limnological and lower trophic level sampling
• carry out preliminary analysis, archiving and reporting of data
• act as a group leader to staff and students
• provide technical editing and report assistance to assessment biologists

How do I qualify?

Mandatory

• valid class 'G' driver's licence or equivalent, as recognized by the Province of Ontario
• valid Marine First Aid, or the ability to obtain
• valid MED DVS (Marine Emergency Duties - Domestic Vessel Safety) training or greater, or the ability to obtain
• Small Vessel Operator proficiency course/test, or the ability to obtain
• Electrofishing certification, or the ability to obtain

Technical expertise:

• knowledge and expertise in the identification of fish and aquatic species
• knowledge of sampling procedures for aquatic surveys, including limnological and lower trophic levels
• knowledge of fish habitat and population assessment techniques and equipment
• knowledge of fish ageing methods and ability to estimate age of fish using appropriate structures

Fieldwork skills:

• ability to operate/maintain various types of fishing gear, boats, motors and limnological equipment
• knowledge of fishing gear design, construction and use

Interpersonal and communication skills:

• ability to work in a team environment and provide leadership when directing the work of other technicians and students
• communication skills to interact tactfully with members of the public and other staff, and to write technical reports and communication materials

Analytical skills:

• planning and time management skills to manage workload and balance conflicting priorities
• analytical skills, problem-solving, sound decision-making and safe work methods

Computer proficiency:

• knowledge of sound data management concepts and field devices for limnological analysis
• proficiency with typical office hardware/software and common office productivity applications
