About the job

You will:

• manage, maintain and archive Geographic Names records by scanning records and hard copy maps, and assisting in the organization, preservation and accessibilty of records
• research digital and hard copy records and respond to requests for Geographic Names information
• provide guidance to summer students, assign and monitor their progress and work related to file management activities
• digitize from hard copy maps and records, and update geographic names data that resides in the Corporate GIS/Database Editing system
• prepare various types of digital maps through the use of GIS and related software for geographic names questionnaire surveys and Ontario Geographic Names Board meetings
• conduct research into various Geographic Names by collecting, collating and analyzing the data within the Geographic Names record
• maintain databases and spreadsheets to support Geographic Names activities

What you bring to the team


Administrative skills:

• You have knowledge of paper and electronic file systems, indexing, office procedures, records management and records retention procedures.
• You have knowledge of office practices and general clerical processes and the ability to use and perform minor maintenance to office equipment.
• You have knowledge of Geographic Names terminology in order to provide accurate filing, indexing, search services and provide customer service to clients.

Computer skills and software:

• You have knowledge of computer software such as Microsoft Suite, including spreadsheets and databases to enter and retrieve data, scan documents, design simple databases and reports.
• You have demonstrated ability to use Geographical Information Systems software (such as ARCGIS software) to digitize and update geographic name extents, populate and update tabular information.

Research and analytical skills:

• You have sound analytical and problem-solving skills to resolve data issues and discrepancies between provincial records and national records.
• You have good research and analytical skills to determine source and extent of information required when evaluating requests for information.

Organizational and prioritization skills:

• You have good organizational, planning, and prioritizing skills to juggle priorities and complete tasks with competing demands.
• You have the ability to work effectively within a multi-disciplinary team.

Communication skills:

• You have excellent interpersonal and oral communication skills to respond to geographic names requests, provide information accurately and promptly in a high demand environment.
• You have demonstrated written communication skills to prepare written responses to inquiries regarding geographic names records.
