The position includes responsibility for Schools for the Blind/Low-Vision, Deaf-Blind, Deaf/Hard of Hearing where American Sign Language (ASL) is the primary language of instruction and severe learning disabilities. PDSB is seeking Superintendents of Education who have a demonstrated track record of success and leadership in educational administration, expertise, experience and interest in the education of exceptional students.
About the job
On a short-term or on-call basis you may support the senior team as well as managers and Principals to:
- Build a shared vision of student and system success;
- Provide leadership to Schools for the Blind/Low-Vision, Deaf/Hard of Hearing, Deaf-Blind and Schools for students with severe learning disabilities;
- Ensure consistency and accountability for effective planning, delivery and monitoring of quality education in a school, residence or resource setting, empowering others to work in the best interest of all students;
- Manage teaching, support and professional staff including issues management and working with multiple bargaining agents;
- Provide coaching and support to system leaders and managers;
- Engage parents, stakeholders and staff in a positive culture of mutual respect focused on student success;
- Lead legislative and policy initiatives ensuring development, communication and compliance;
- Lead and support organizational management needs and initiatives;
- Work collaboratively with Senior Management to ensure a team approach in meeting system needs across schools and programs.
What you bring to the team
Requirements:
- You must be a member in good standing with the Ontario College of Teachers.
- You must have completed the Supervisory Officer's Qualification Program (SOQP) and you hold a Supervisory Officer Certificate.
- You must have knowledge of bilingual and bicultural education.
- You must have awareness of the American Sign Language (ASL) community and culture.
- In addition, one of the following Specialist qualifications is preferred:
- Teaching Students who are Blind/Low-Vision Specialist;
- Teaching Students who are Deaf-Blind Specialist;
- Teaching Students who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing Specialist;
- Special Education, Specialist.
Leadership skills:
- You demonstrate success in inspiring a shared vision of system leadership, supporting a positive working and learning environment, and modeling professionalism and integrity.
- You demonstrate success in coaching and managing the performance and instructional leadership capabilities of Principals and Vice-Principals.
- You demonstrate success in leading staff in a unionized environment and you have experience working with Collective Agreements (PSAT, OPSEU, AMAPCEO).
- You demonstrate strong skills in the areas of initiative, emotional intelligence, change management, and instructional leadership.
Strategic thinking, analytical and problem-solving skills:
- You are a strategic and innovative thinker, creative problem solver and can work collaboratively with a team of senior level education professionals and stakeholders.
- You have analytical and problem-solving skills and display political acuity and professionalism when dealing with complex and/or contentious situations.
Stakeholder management skills:
- You have experience building and maintaining relationships across the organization and with external partners.
- You have excellent communication skills to provide briefings on program issues, represent the ministry with school boards, partner ministries, community partners, staff and parents.
Specialized knowledge:
- You have knowledge of legislation, professional regulations, priorities and directions related to education in Ontario.
