Consider this unique and exciting senior executive opportunity that directs the development of strategies and advice on a broad range of intergovernmental and international relations issues.

As the Director, Economics, Justice and International Relations Policy, you will be at the front end of shaping strong intergovernmental and international relations policy for Ontario. We are seeking an inspiring and proactive leader who can develop strong intergovernmental relations with provincial, territorial, federal and international officials, coordinate on a broad range of intergovernmental and international relations policy issues, and provide strategic advice to stakeholders, senior Ontario Public Service (OPS) leaders: Premier and Premiers' Office, the Secretary of Cabinet/Cabinet Office, the Deputy Minister, the Assistant Deputy Minister and other OPS ministries.

What can I expect to do in this role?

As the Director for Economics, Justice and International Relations Policy, you will:

• Provide timely and strategic advice and support to OPS senior leaders and executives.
• Identify emerging intergovernmental and international relations issues and lead the development of strategic options based on effective research, analysis and intelligence to address these issues.
• Provide direction and lead analysis related to federal/provincial fiscal arrangements and the impact of these arrangements on Ontario.
• Identify strategic opportunities to collaborate with other jurisdictions and key stakeholders.
• Lead the development of, and provide, strategic intergovernmental and international relations policy advice to OPS Ministries, including advice related to intergovernmental and international agreements, negotiations, protocols and communications.
• Maintain a wide network of contacts and relationships (internal/external to the OPS) to ensure strategic awareness of federal, provincial and territorial, and international activities.

How do I qualify?

Senior Executive Leadership

• You have strategic senior leadership experience and have led organizational transformation and can translate organizational priorities/direction to stakeholders and staff.
• You have demonstrated political acuity and a well-developed ability to build and maintain partnerships, including develop trust and positive working relationships with internal/external partners and stakeholders.
• You have demonstrated the ability to ensure that complex information is communicated in a clear and meaningful way to stakeholders and senior officials.

Job Specific

• You have a well-developed understanding of key domestic intergovernmental issues which impact Ontario's strategic intergovernmental economic, justice and fiscal interests.
• You understand Ontario's international relations priorities and the role of the province in international relations policy.
• You have knowledge of the structure, operations, policy-framework and decision-making processes of the Government of Ontario.
• You have knowledge of federalism and the constitutional division of powers, and the implications of these for intergovernmental relations and policy development in Canada.
• You have demonstrated success in developing and leading horizontal policy initiatives in inter-ministry and intergovernmental environments.
• You have strong political acuity, commitment to innovation and creativity.
• You have demonstrated research, policy analysis, and intelligence gathering skills.

Relationship and Issues Management:

• You are a strong communicator who can deliver effective presentations and convey complex information in clear, concise and easy to understand language.
• You have experience interacting with senior government officials, politicians, business leaders and other stakeholder groups.
• You have well developed political acuity and can proactively resolve urgent or potentially sensitive situations from escalating.
• You have the proven ability to develop strategic/sustainable relationships and foster collaboration amongst stakeholders with competing interests.

  • In accordance with the Ontario Public Service (OPS), Employment Screening Checks Policy (ESCP), the top candidate(s) may be required to undergo a security screening check. Refer to the above to determine the screening checks that are required for this position.
