The Quinte Detention Centre seeks an experienced trades professional to provide general maintenance for the institution.

Please note:
• This position requires you to work on an on-call basis. The hours of work are 0 to 40 hours per week, including weekends and statutory holidays, based on operational requirements and with no guaranteed hours.
• This position requires working with and providing direction to inmate helpers

What can I expect to do in this role?

In this role, you will perform a variety of maintenance duties such as:

• Provide assistances to trades contractors and service providers
• Perform plumbing maintenance (replace toilets, plumbing lines, taps, unplug clogged drains, sewage lines and traps)
• Perform electrical maintenance (change bulbs, fuses, switches and fixtures)
• Perform other semi-skilled maintenance (welding for items, install piping and plumbing fixtures, install appliances and equipment)
• Assist with masonry and carpentry projects
• Assist with developing and maintaining a preventative maintenance program
• Provide supervision and instructions to inmate helpers
• Maintain accurate supplies, tracking logs and records
• Other duties, as assigned

How do I qualify?

Mandatory

• You have completed apprenticeship training in one of the skilled trades and are certified by the Province of Ontario

Specialized Knowledge and Experience

• You have knowledge of and demonstrated experience in a wide variety of general maintenance work (such as plumbing, welding, electrical, etc.)
• You are able to work from blueprints, specifications, and shop-drawings to perform maintenance tasks
• You have experience in the safe operation of power equipment and hand tools
• You have knowledge of health and safety and demonstrated ability to follow organizational policies and procedures

Skills

• You have communication skills in order to work with other trades persons and institutional staff as well as provide instruction and supervision to inmate helpers
• You have problem-solving skills in order to determine areas in need of preventative maintenance, estimating material requirements/costs, and identifying issues
