About the job
In this role, you will:
• Check, test and service mechanical equipment by cleaning, oiling, greasing and replacing worn/broken parts
• Maintain and service motorized mechanical vehicles
• Build, repair and fabricate metal items
• Operate hand, power, diagnostic and technical tools
• Log and complete inspection reports outlining maintenance and/or repairs made
• Review drawings, schematics and specifications in order to carry out simple diagnostic functions and to perform simple repairs/modifications
• Provide general labour/technical assistance to support events/activities and to support other departments and trades staff.
What you bring to the team
Mandatory requirements
• You must have a Valid Ontario Class G Driver's License
Technical Knowledge:
• You have knowledge of relevant legislation, municipal bylaws and codes and provincial building codes in order to ensure the safety and integrity of installations, and to prevent injuries and to aid in determining work methods
• You have knowledge of Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS), Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA) for proper equipment operation/utilization and to maintain the safety and security of the work area and staff
• You have knowledge of procedures for handling and disposal of hazardous waste including oil heating equipment, boilers, and sewage and water plant operations
• You have knowledge of safety procedures and operational use and handling of hand powered, diagnostic and technical tools, equipment (e.g. air guns, power wrenches, torches, drills, grinders, shop equipment) and motorized vehicles (e.g. mark lift, forklift) to diagnose problems and perform repairs
Business Knowledge:
• You have knowledge of plumbing and heating/air conditioning systems in order to perform repairs and maintenance
• You are able to diagnose, test and inspect mechanical, air-conditioning and heating systems/equipment
• You are able to identify cause of equipment malfunction and methods of repair (e.g. investigating refrigeration line leaks)
• You have knowledge of computerized systems relating to the monitoring of automated systems for mechanical and electrical equipment, electronic locking systems, building environmental controls and security monitors
• You have knowledge of the techniques, equipment and tools required to conduct repairs to determine the proper methods of problem diagnosis and establish service requirements
• You have experience with understanding drawings, schematics and specification diagrams to assist in performing maintenance and repairs
• You are able to interpret sketches, specifications and drawings for use to assess and determine methodology and complexity of work process
Organizational and Planning Skills:
• You have excellent planning, organizational, prioritization and time management skills to identify, plan, organize and complete the sequential steps necessary to investigate, inspect, and evaluate problems
• You can perform the necessary service requirements to complete required work within timelines
Communication, Analytical and Problem Solving Skills:
• You have excellent interpersonal and communication skills to inform Foreman/Manager on the progress, length of time and requirements for performing work and to provide detailed technical explanations in plain language terms
• You are able to complete inspection reports and write and maintain repair logs
• You have excellent analytical and problem solving skills to assess and solve practical problems
