Fort William Historical Park is a leading heritage and cultural attraction bringing people from across North America to our doors to experience a unique 19th century destination, to learn about Canadian fur trade history, including tours, demonstrations, dramas, feasts, and concerts.
As a Costume Specialist, you will join a dynamic team and support staff by maintaining and creating an extensive collection of replica costume articles, uniforms, and textile based exhibits. You will also conduct public interpretive and education programming using designated living history methods. Come see everything Fort William Historical Park has to offer!
Please Note: The successful candidate will be required to attend overnight functions, and off-hour programs, work holidays and weekends as required.
What can I expect to do in this role?
In this position, you will:
- Coordinate, procure and maintains an extensive collection of replica costume articles and uniforms
- Conducts research related to costume styles, designs, sewing techniques, fabrics and accessories
- Plan and conduct workshops and training sessions for staff, volunteers and clients
- Provide technical direction and training to student staff as required
- Complete data entry of costume and museum exhibit collection profiles into inventory management software
How do I qualify?
Mandatory
- You have a valid Class G Ontario Drivers License to transport costumes for cleaning and repair, or to locate resources for fabrics.
Technical Expertise:
- You can coordinate the procurement and maintenance of period-accurate costumes for Fort William Historical Park programs, events, promotions, and projects.
- You have experience with costumes and wardrobe in such areas as film production or theatre.
- You can adapt early 19th century costume styles, materials, and skills for the distribution, maintenance and installation of period articles and fashions into public programming formats, period costumes, draperies, linens and textiles.
- You have knowledge of contemporary and early 19th century European and Indigenous North American tailoring methodology and application.
- You can apply accepted museum practice in regard to the care, accessioning, de-accessioning of period and reproduction artifacts;
- You have knowledge of cleaning and preservation techniques applicable to a broad range of textiles.
- You have hand sewing, machine sewing, serging, pattern making, design and tailoring skills.
Research and Analytical Skills:
- You can source books, information, descriptions and sketches of historic period costumes to support public programs.
- You can locate resources for obtaining fabrics and assess colours and textures of fabrics.
- You have analytical skills to assess historical authenticity of new, replacement or upgraded costumes.
Communication Skills:
- You have oral communication skills to share expertise with staff, volunteers and program partners through training sessions and regular consultation.
- You can participate in historical dramatization and interpretative demonstrations.
- You can work independently and as part of a team.
Organizational Skills:
- You can maintain data concerning costume inventory e.g., descriptions, sizes, dates of issue, scheduled cleanings and repairs.
- You have proven organizational skills to meet deadlines, and accurately assess costume preparation and planning time.
