What can I expect to do in this role?

As a member of the Centre's maintenance team, you will:

• Renovate, alter, repair, install and carry out routine maintenance of all electrical/electronic equipment and appliances
• Determine work methods in accordance with government codes and by-laws
• Estimate material and labour requirements
• Inspect and repairing electrical items
• Perform preventative maintenance
• Repair/maintain tools and equipment ensuring security
• Assist other maintenance staff with a variety of minor maintenance functions such as plumbing, mechanical and lock service
• Instruct and supervise offender helpers engaged in beneficial labour and ensure their custody, safety and welfare
• Other duties, as assigned

How do I qualify?

Mandatory

• You have a valid 309A electrical licence recognized in the Province of Ontario
• You have the ability to obtain First Aid and Heartsaver certificates

Technical Knowledge and Skills

• You have extensive experience with the techniques, equipment and tools used in the electrical practice to determine the proper methods for installing electrical equipment
• You have knowledge of blueprints, schematics and drawings to ensure the proper layout of installations
• You can work in accordance with government building codes, construction/trade regulations and guidelines, established practices and procedures of the electrical trade, and workplace health and safety standards

Assessment and Problem-Solving Skills

• You are able to estimate labour and material requirements to install, service and replace electrical equipment
• You have experience inspecting electrical systems and perform necessary adjustments, servicing and repairs
• You are able to find cause of defects in electrical, mechanical and electronic systems as well as recommend solutions or method of repair

Communication Skills

• You can discuss requests for new installations or repairs as well as explain issues and malfunctions to off-site technician
• You are able to explain technical matters in easily understood terms
• You have demonstrated tact and discretion in order to train and supervise inmate helpers in electrical methods and procedures, maintain control of helpers and deal with behavioural issues, and provide input to offender disciplinary/performance reports
• You have written communication skills to prepare reports, maintain logs, and draft plans, sketches and cost estimates for new projects

Computer skills

• Proficiency with information systems to perform necessary quality assurance checks and locate/isolate issues
• Ability to access, read, and evaluate data produced by automated systems and computer monitoring systems as well as prepare reports and input data
